I’ve had my Tacoma for a few months now, I was thinking of getting a pedal commander but wanted to see people’s experience with them and if they are worth it?

I’m also still under factory warranty would y’all know if that would void my warranty?

    It would not void warranty.

That's an even bigger love/hate item than a spacer lift. Some people swear by them. Others think that its trash.

I personally hold a low opinion of them, and I guarantee that if I said why, someone will jump in and argue why I'm wrong. :cookiemonster:

I'm also strictly in camp get-a-tune. All the response you want, no hoaky box cluttering up your cab.

Id like to know why you have a low opinion, I hope no one jumps in to argue, I posted to get different opinions so hopefully no one will jump in just to argue. Thanks in advance

My buddy has one in his truck and he insisted I try it so I threw it in my supercharged truck really quick and tried it. I didnt really like it. All it does is make the gas pedal more sensitive. But some people like and some dont. Its just personal perference. Wont actually make your truck any faster

Sure. And by the way, arguing doesn't offend me or foul my mood in any way. Everyone is welcome to express their opinions, loudly. It doesn't hurt my feelings. :cookiemonster::cookiemonster:

My assessment of the PC is that it's basically a middleman between your foot and the throttle map. It doesn't actually fix or alter the throttle map. To put it in very simplistic terms (and here's where I get the most blowback), it takes your pedal input and gives the impression that it's more responsive by pressing the pedal a little harder than what you are doing. Yes, it is a bit more complicated than that in reality, but it's all stuff that you could be doing for free if you learned to play the pedal to get the desired response.

On the flip side, for close to the same money, there's an ECU tune. That one, if you find the right tuner, will completely customize and rewrite the throttle map, the different transmission shift maps (including the mode when the ECT button is pushed), and also a large number of engine parameters. It rewrites everything.

I went the second route, and I'm glad I did. Because that one is a program. The PC is an overlay on an existing system. That's why I'm not big on them. I'm not judging the people that run them, but it's not something I would do in my truck.

It will work for some time but eventually will throw a CEL and your truck will go into limp mode. Happened to my buddy and to quite a few TW members.

    I do not recommend PC.

Flashing ECU with a tune is more bang for your buck. I’ve been tuned for 4 years now, absolutely love it. No issues whatsoever.

Look up banks comparing their pedal monster to the pedal commander. Some interesting information in there.
One can make the comment that of course they will say theirs is better but they go into why.

I've had Pedal commander and it worked as advertised until it threw a check engine light. Now have KDMax tune and it also improves throttle response plus helps greatly with the wonky transmission shifting.

Yep, guaranteed to do that. Sometimes it takes few weeks, sometimes few months. I my buddies case, it was 6 months.

The sentiment is obviously to do the tune...that said, I added the Pedal Commander during black Friday and for me it was game changer. Basically made my truck fun to drive. Also, my cruise control (predictive if that matters) used to be horrible. It's not perfect but it cleaned up the gearing.

Agree on the tune. Just a bit more $$ up front but it’s worth it. Got mine tuned in April last year at 6300 miles and change. Will hit 107k miles sometime tomorrow morning headed to Asunción Paraguay. Not one issue in 11months.

I dont have one but Ill tell you why I decided against it. First there are very rare but occasional issues in which the truck would shut off while driving. Second, it doesnt make your truck actually run out the gears, but instead just makes them shift with less press on the throttle. Third, to fix the potential "shut of" problem youd have to buy their "fix it" which isnt something you should have to pay extra for considering its their fuck up and could potentially cause at the best an inconvenience, at worst;death.

Yeah sorry I have to disagree on the whole gear thing. That is unless the tuners are lying and they have programmed the rpm gauge to read what they want.

Start my truck out in D and get in the highway. Take it to 90. In Wyoming and with the speed limit 90 is not a big deal. Truck will take each gear to 500 to 700 before redline.

Before tune it would have been in 6th before 50 mph.

I have put 109k miles on my truck since it was tuned in April of 2023. It’s never shut off. Don’t know where you heard that.

And not one tuner on here associated with any of the commercial tunes would fuck your truck up and then ask you to pay to fix it. You must be listening to some bullshit.

Could you recommend someone to do that ECU tune? A buddy did the COBB tune for his raptor and they send a fancy gizmo to plug to the computer, download file and bingo..

Yeh understood. I was talking about the pedal commander not a tune. And that is exactly what happened with the pedal commander.
