I’m just curious has anybody had any problems with their exhaust valves? I guess not opening all the way on their engine? My check engine light came on and shut off my track traction light and the code says something about my exhaust valves and now it’s gonna cost me $8500 to rebuild my engine I have 103,000 miles on my 2017 Toyota Tacoma. I have done every maintenance the Toyota wanted just curious if anybody has any ideas Toyota will not help out. Just wondering if anybody else is running into these problems, or if anybody has any ideas ? My truck is not missing never had any problems with it just to check engine light came on and that’s what they told me was wrong with it

I'm assuming one of the P11XX codes is what you got. If so, that means an exhaust valve or seat is burnt and not sealing properly. New head and valve is the fix. There have been a decent number of them reported here. I'd source a used engine and install it myself before I'd pay $8500 for someone to rebuild the cylinder head.

By the way, you don't need the engine rebuilt unless this is a different non-P11 issue.

Maintenance doesn’t prevent or solve cylinder imbalance codes.

Yeah I checked on a used engine it’s $11,000 I didn’t regular maintenance and I understand what you’re saying. I asked Toyota for help and they denied me. I just don’t know what to do. It’s crazy supposed to be one of the most dependable trucks in this engines have problems,

you are correct that’s exactly what the code is. They said they have to put a new head on it they can’t replace the old one

Yeah unfortunately they have to replace the cyl head and the valves that are bad. They’ll reuse all the other valves.

$8500 is quite high for a cyl head job. I would shop around on that one. Used engines from junkyards are usually $3-6K depending on mileage. Of course there is labor on top of that if labor is needed.

Your dont need an engine. The price they quoted you is the head replacement.
The Head and valves will cost you around 1.5-2k+other part and supplies. The rest is the labor. Shop around to see if you can reduce the labor cost.

Definitely not . 2.7 engines are built and designed tougher

Look on F150 forums and you will see why Toyota IS one of the most dependable trucks. The number of defects on Ford engines far surpasses the number of defects on Toyota engines.

Toyota Dependability: Less likely to blow up than a Ford.

I was quoted ~6k by a local dealer to replace a head gasket on toyota 4 banger engine. The job is done without pulling the engine out.

"Definitely not . 2.7 engines are built and designed tougher"..actually not always. There was a known issue with the 2.7 on Gen 2 trucks where the exhaust valves would sink into the head. I had to replace the head on my 2000 2.7 at around 150k. Thus my question :)

Toyota had us changing cylinder heads due to this code. Valves never fixed it.

They better ensure they will stand by the repairs.

3.5 engines used are around $5-6k with decent mileage - 70-80k.
So unless you have a very good mechanic, that can do job so it'll last, i would go with engine replacement. I mean if just a repair costs $4k or more .

Yea but add in another 4-5k in labor and misc items needed for a swap. Plus, who knows how well that 70-80k motor was treated.

That is what they are doing changing the head code on number 2 cylinder.

I was quoted 2.5K to replace my Tundra's 5.7, so probably depends where you live.
