Well, it took almost 2 months with all the back and forth with AutoAnything getting what I ordered and have it actually be all there and right. I started with a Gibson catback that was really just a muffler back and their explanation was "some of the Gibsons are just like that" so it had to go back. The Flowmaster I ordered was a catback and was supposed to be stainless but was not and actually had a silver painted muffler with aluminized pipe [WTF?]. Then I got a $2500 Corsa exhaust they put on Vettes and 911s which I obviously didn't order.

I ended up with a MBRP stainless exhaust with a Magnaflow 5x11x22 muffler as that MBRP 6x20 round muffler in this kit will make for a quite loud system [I found out previously] and the Magnaflow system is $100 higher with only a 4x9x18 muffler. I chose to use the MBRP resonator though which I did on my last V6 truck as they actually do help shape the sound, lower the exhaust note a tad, and reduce some of that V6 raspiness [or rice-burner sound].

Well, here is the view of the exhaust itself. Thanks to freakin' Hughes Satellite which is all I can get here where I live, uploading this video and getting it posted took 2 hours. So, when I have an extra 2 hours to waste, I will upload the "sound" video.

My kind of exhaust porn is a open header , solid lifter cam big block . This sounds worse then a single cam non vtec civic trying to hit the sound barrier going though gears in your neighborhood Walmart parking lot

You are hearing sound here? Um, I haven't posted the sound video yet . . .

That said, I can fire up my ole' 442 and post a video of that if it is that important to you?

I just thought being a Tacoma site and all . . . folks "with Tacomas" might get some good out of this . . . or not!

^ @Toyomonkey59 that's pretty sad. Kinda like going to Burger King and ordering a Whopper and opening the wrapper just to find out they forgot the hamburger patty.

Knowing these two experiences now will help me not order from autoanything. Especially knowing there are problems getting refunds. Although I wouldn't mind getting the $2500 Corsa. That would be kept as negotiation evidence.

You know, I've ordered a bunch of stuff from AutoAnything and this Exhaust Project is the first time I've had problems. I was beginning to think on exhausts that they were like Overstock.com of Auto Parts or something since everything was wrong, not what I ordered, etc. But, they did do me right with refunds at least. Other than having to do things 4 times, the only thing that really pissed me off is they sent FedEx out to collect their $2500 Corsa screw up and would not pick up the Flowmaster non-stainless painted muffler crap I also had to return. I had to drive it to town. The FedEx guy said he was not allowed to take it.

I'm going to have to wait 11 more days to post my sound clip. Freakin' Hughes Satellite is the worst. Between uploading this HD video and downloading some DirecTV shows I missed [that I thought would come via the DirecTV link, not internet], I have exhausted my minuscule data allowance for this month. Going to give Pixius a try when my 2 years plan penalty box nonsense is up.

Are you generally happy with your set up?

My problem is I like OEM items...meaning I'd probably go with the TRD exhaust. Although I am confident there are much better setups out there. Take for example yours. I just don't know what to buy and how much it will cost in all. Therefor any guidance is appreciated.

Where in KS are you? I'm guessing a very rural area since you have Hughes. Sounds like you are experiencing the exact opposite of what they claim in the commercials. Have you looked for some sort of wifi system through your cell phone company. For example I'm on Verizon and can buy a Hotspot module that uses the towers to broadcast wifi to devices linked to it. Perhaps that would be something for you?

I looked up pixius and it looks like it's the same type I have. Which uses wireless repeater towers. Unlimited data. Satellite is horrible. No matter what you get. It's capped. Even though they say it's not. After you exceed the data limit they slow your shit down to like dial up speeds. The wireless repeaters, depending on the company, can be shady. But, better than satellite. And mine is no contract. I had one company where I live that went out of business. Was sold, then they went out if business too. I now have one called Airbeam. Way more reliable speeds. And so far no connection issues. They say they monitor usage, and say that using p2p services are not allowed. But I have yet to have them say anything. So that pixius sounds like the way to go. I would be sure to read ALL the terms and conditions. Maybe see if any other repeater services are available and weigh your options.

    Wifi Interlude . . .

Though we love living here [beautiful all brick home, finally have my detached man-cave I've always wanted, and a stocked pond on 10 acres] we are ALSO in a 4GLTE dead spot too so the Verizon option is a no-go at least for now. I've been keeping my eyes out for Stepford wives, Vampires, and Zombies out here but none sighted to date . . .

It is Hughes or [now] Pixius is available which I will probably try as soon as my plan expires so I don't have to pay their stupid substantial penalty for early withdrawal . . .

Now, back to Exhaust Porn . . .

Truthfully, I would probably be happy with a replacement OEM system as well and I am not interested in making much noise at my age. But I wanted to go stainless and I know from my Ford V6 a few years back that this particular combination just has a mellow rumble on a V6 without much of that raspiness, rice burner sound I don't care for which is why I use the biggest Magnaflow that will fit.

I didn't actually look into pricing on a TRD exhaust replacement but, given the premium on everything else "TRD", I cannot imagine it would be cheap or cheaper. Given my multi-return problem, AutoAnything sold the MBRP system to me for $419, though I think the regular price is $479. So, even with adding the extra Magnaflow muffler expense of $142.50, my system was "on the truck" for less than $650 including the Midas welding adder. I am not including the Cat replacement in this as that was a standard maintenance item and a direct fit factory replacement. The Magnaflow stainless system with the smaller muffler by comparison was $572 by itself.

So, liking the sound and the price, then it is a matter of looks and durability and I really like the way this system fits up in there. I thought I might have to mount the muffler on end like some have done but it is all above the frame rail mounted flat so that worked out too. I sold my Ford not too long after that exhaust replacement so I have no idea how durable the system is compared to just OEM?

    Yet anyway. . .

    Hope this helps?

Yeah I don't have much experience with exhaust systems myself. I had a performance shop install my system for me. I'm hoping it lasts quite a while. All new 2.25 mild steel from the manifold back. Ultra quiet resonator. Magnaflow high flow cat. Borla pro xs muffler. Mandrel bent. Exited out the bedside. Paid $550 for them to install it. Total cost was like $850 with the parts. So it better freaking last. Ha. I'm really happy with everything, especially the quality of the install.
So hurry up and get us a sound clip fool!!

Looking forward to the sound clip, even if the OP has to go to the public library or McDonalds to upload it. :)

Given that it's not easy to make a V6 exhaust sound decent without $$ I'm happy with my original, non-TRD exhaust. Most times I just barely notice it, so that seems about right to me. In other words, if I notice it at *all* it's already louder than most bone-stock I4 and V6 vehicles, which are essentially silent?

What I've noticed about many aftermarket setups is they have a section of RPM where they sound kinda neat and then other RPM or speed ranges where you wish you'd left well enough alone ...

That said ... what's a TRD exhaust for these 1st Gen trucks? What's different about it?

    Edit: geez, typos

Well, I don't want to turn this thread into a "let's bitch about our ISP" but I've had quite a week with Hughes. I called them on Monday and gave them a piece of my mind because of all the issues with horrible speed and data allowance which didn't end well. Immediately afterwards I had NO internet at all. When I called back, they said they would have to dispatch a tech and charge me another $125 and couldn't possibly get here until Friday. Even though I knew they disabled it from their end, I had to wait on the tech to verify and sure enough "my modem's memory had been wiped" which, short of the modem being toast which was not the case, can only happen with a S/W command from their end. So, I called and went through several management layers and they eventually caved, rescinded the service call fee, most of their BS overage charges, and gave me enough data allowance to [hopefully] get me by 5 more days.

Unfortunately, I had to upload this LD quality which also affected the sound quality so it is what it is. After my month turns over so I have enough data allowance, I will upload an HD version.

And, I will be switching ISPs as soon as possible . . .

Yup sounds good mang!! Sounds very similar to my setup actually. Kinda surprised. That resonator helps a ton though. Love the tone. So glad it didn't turn out loud and raspy and crackly like all the other ones I have listened to.

I also think it sounds good and if you say there aren't any annoying resonances in the power band then I'd agree it's a real success. I couldn't find a kit on AutoAnything's site for my 2WD Double Cab except for a "turn down" setup but I'd want to retain a tailpipe I can see ... no matter, I'm not in the market for an exhaust.

But if I wanted your sound I'd need part numbers for the muffler and resonator and then hopefully fill in the blanks with appropriate pipes I suppose. Or maybe your new cat also plays a role there.

    *****************

FYI, a high def video version is pointless for what's essentially a listening exercise. To save yourself bandwidth and upload time, consider editing the video to black-and-white or better yet, extract just the audio and forget the video altogether. :)
