I have a 1996 Tacoma that needs a new muffler and I was thinking of short piping it. I just want opinions on what type and if it is a good idea or not.

keep your exhasut and air intake restricted. Otherwise, you will lose all low end torque, which, is all that your truck has. So, don't squander it;)

What I'm meaning is shortening my exhaust and brining it out around where the cab and bed meet.

oooooh gotcha. I'd like to do that as well, but when I got my exhaust redone it was too much of a pain so I said fuck it and got it done out the back.

Go to your local exhaust shop and have them cut out the old piping after the cat, weld in new piping and a new muffler, with the exhaust exiting just after the rear axle. Shouldn't cost more that 200 bucks. Boom, you have a brand new cat back exhaust.

That's how mine is done, works well for me. Flowmaster 40 series and a simple pipe routed out before the front spring hanger. I think I will probably redo it soon and go out through the bed side or over the framerail and then down, because I have gotten close to hitting it a couple times now. But if you don't go crazy off road then your probably fine how I have it. It's basically the same way some F-150s came in the mid 90s and early 00s.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. Anyone got recommendations as far as muffler and what they recommend/prefer?

I personally have a Flowmaster 40 Series and it sounds alright on my 4 banger (honestly sounds like a diesel under load until 3750RPM). But I think I may switch it out for a different sound come spring time.

Here is a video of the sound (jump to 1:54) ...

I think exiting the side would be better than dumping it down under the truck. I would think that'd cause more in cab drone. I have mine exited out through the bedside body. It's sick. But I paid a shit ton to get it all done professionally. And I suggest a borla. I personally don't like any other muffler sound on our trucks, at least from all the sound clips I've listened to on here.. except the trd which is basically the same sound as borla produces.
I got the borla pro xs. Sounds AWESOME.
