    Hey guys,
I have a 2015 Tacoma just at 60k. A few weeks ago the check engine came on and the trac control went off. I bought a new gas cap (the old one was fine but I figured I’d throw a Hail Mary) and then took to the dealer where they did a smoke test. Tech couldn’t find any leak. They told me that the next step would be to drop the tank and look for the leak but that’s $500 just to drop the tank. Tech also said that whatever leak it is is so small that it’s not hurting anything and that he would just run it until it threw a different code. I wouldn’t mind it so much if it didn’t cut off the traction control but it just bugs me.

What would you guys do as a next step? And also will Toyota warranty the parts if I have to put something new in? Those emissions warranties are sketchy. I live in Virginia too FYI.

it’s one thing to pay to fix it but to pay to just take a best guess would bother me.

is there a way to pull a fuse to just cut the stupid system off?

Small leaks can be incredibly difficult to find as the threshold hole size to trigger a small leak codes is generally around 1mm, it's gona take someone with a smoke machine, a bright light, and probably some patience that knows their way around an EVAP system, you also have to check the purge vsv too because if the smoke is coming out there you won't see it while it's still connected to the intake manifold.

I had a Cadillac with a small leak one time and it took me several tries to find it, ended up being a slight crack in a fitting on top of the tank.

I'm pretty sure the Federal Emissions Warranty (8yr 80K) only covers catalytic converters.

Would you just run it or try to find a good mechanic in who works on evap?

If you don't have to pass any emissions in your area and ur not worried about the light being on run it and see if it becomes a large leak (bigger leaks are much easier to find) just scan it for codes regularly because if something else pops up that would turn the light on you wouldn't know.
If you find someone that's good with EVAP systems they should be able to find it but it still may take some time.

^^ Pretty much this. If you don't need to fix it, ignore it. Now, if you want to much around with it yourself, there are a ton of 'How to' videos on YouTube that will show you how to build a pretty serviceable smoke machine for <$20, and along with diagnostic videos on emissions issues, you can have a bash at trying to sort it yourself.

Had a similar situation last month. Changed with a OEM new Gas cap! Still Trac Light and CEL on. Next I changed the Purge solenoid on top of engine to the left of the PCV and that worked since for $50 from NAPA !!! Have no CEL and Trac Light on since! disconect battery before changing Purge Sol. then reconnect and drive for a 1/2 hour to reprogram ECU!

You will have to remember it only does the test after being shut down. It will need to see two successful consecutive tests to pass. So if you change a part, the MIL will not go away right that instant.
