Never really thought about this until I got a call from my brother while hunting stated he is in an arguement with a guy over who gets the deer. It was his first deer neverless buck so he was pretty hyped.

I have "heard" both sides of the story: it's the 2nd shooters deer, it's the first guys deer blah blah.

I told him, screw it.. not worth the hassle of fighting with this guy who knows where it will go, just let him have it and we can go out again. So he snapped a few photos and went on his way.. not happy.

His situation was he saw the buck walk in, stand there for a few minutes and he let an arrow rip and deer ran off. When they got there another guy was approaching from the other side saying he shot it. 2 arrows in deer not really sure who shot first.

I’d maybe be more concerned with hunting right on top of each other to the point people are shooting the same animal haha

Not worth the hassle and seeing as it's his first deer does he want this distasteful memory. He will be shooting a bigger one now that he lost that . Always another deer around the corner

Growing up in MT and hunting my entire life the "rule" that we have always gone by is that whomever fires the fatal shot is who keeps the animal. There's certainly a TON of gray area though.

Both full pass throughs? Who made the better shot? Don't guess it matters at the end of the day, I wouldn't want the hassle of arguing over it.

In my situation it's easy. I'm going to pull my .45 and walk the poacher to the road side and wait for the Sheriff or Game Warden to swing by. Then I get a deer and a new to me bow.

Back to the OP on public lands. Dunno that's a tough call. IMHO I'd be willing to split the deer in half and he can have the horns (they don't cook worth a dog). The harder part would be checking in the critter. Getting pulled with half a deer is just as bad as getting pulled for a full deer with no game tag.

    Cheers,

    Doc

Mostly stock with a few minor mods.
I don't bow hunt, but if an injured deer goes by me and I kill it, I always give it to the person who shot it first and consider it me just helping them from losing a deer due to a bad shot. I've shot so many deer over the years I could care less - but if it is a monster and I down it on my private property...I'd probably think differently.

I’m fortunate enough that I don’t have to hunt to feed myself.
So I’d let the other guy have it. Plus, I don’t find a deer worth arguing over.
Actually, I dislike confrontations of any kind.

If I wanted to kill a deer, I’d just go out and drive around every night until one jumps out in front of me.
Bang!, deer and Taco DRT. We are getting over run with them here. I guess it is because guys like me, just don’t hunt any more. I no longer want to get up early, dress up, load up, sit and wait, to maybe kill a deer.

I guess I’m spoiled and lazy. I’d rather walk in and out of a store. Less than 10 mins, food in hand.

It has actually happened to me twice in my hunting lifetime...2 does and we always went in halves on the meat.

Who's the poacher in this situation? Why do you get to steal the other person's bow? Because you're threatening them with your firearm?

Pulling a pistol over a deer, even if it's a poacher, is silly. Who talks or acts like that?

I can't see being in a situation where two unknown people are that close together while hunting where I am but it's just a deer. Not worth the argument to me. Let em have it. There's lots more out there

Bahahaha! I’m starting to understand why some folks are wearing huge bright orange warning signs on top of their camo.

How can you even determine he is a poacher? Might want to use your brain first before drawing on someone. $100 says it won't end the way you think it will...

In this country, what the land owner tells the cops is what the report says.

I’d agree. Although depending on state, might be an issue figuring out who tags it. Best case scenario, let them tag it, pay half for the processing/meat, and keep your tags lol
