Most likely injector cleaning cycle. I wouldnt worry about it. My engine makes a ticking noise as well when its doing that.

Google it, there is a video of Mike Sweers explaning it, pretty interesting.

It’s a common symptom of all the Tacomas.
Definitely the injectors doing their thing

I wouldn't worry Mark. All newer engines "tick" for one reason or another. It's not the good old days of valve ticks anymore. 4,200 miles is still "breaking it in".

that's the same thinking I had with 100miles total on the odometer, why is this new engine ticking like I needed a new fanbelt/spark plug wire(arcing) and it made me wonder about the engine not purring/smooth running, it's hard to explain this but at slight acceleration you can feel a slight unsmoothness of the engine as like a slight misfire.

I thank the old wise commenters on TW as I didn't know any better myself.

it is the injectors, it happens in all direct injection engines. happens on my tacoma, happened on my bmw. dont worry about it.

The Tacoma has a cleaning cycle that occurs during idle to prevent carbon build up issues that other direct injected vehicles have. Besides that Tacoma engines have always been a bit on the noisy side so nothing to worry about.

I agree, has nothing to do with engine being old or new just a result of direct injection engines in general.

Guess I dont need to upload a video of my Tacoma with 300 miles on it ticking right above the valve cover. TICK TICK TICK TICK TICK TICK TICK TICK. Im sure it is fine based on the 40 threads I found on it that were found with the search. :)

It freaked me out when I bought mine...took it to dealer, they said it was the direct high pressure injection.
We walked over to a brand new Offroad..he fires it up and sure enough it had the same tick!

He told me to start worrying IF IT STOPS TICKING..lol

These 3.5 engines all have diesel like sounds. Some appear to be a noisier than others, but nothing is wrong with them.

Just noticed this on our 2016 Tacoma. It stops when the AC is turned on. Does this make sense?

I bought a Camry 2.5 fks. It was a 2020 l purchased brand new. It made knocking noises right off the bat. I was kinda pissed about it. It gave me 4 years and 100,000 miles of absolute trouble free service. Did maintenance to the t. 5k oil change, filters and all fluids. Sounded exactly the same when I traded it in. As a matter of fact, they gave me almost what I paid for it on a trade. I think the fks motors are noisy. I don’t doubt that engine will be going at 200k with proper maintenance

Gas mileage improved a bit after 100k. The dealer I traded it in to scanned for codes and it was perfect. I hope the Tacoma gives the same reliability. The 3.5 is noisy too. I’m more worried about leaks in this one

My 2023 Tacoma sounds like this vid sometimes, then sonetimes it doesn’t. It’s most persistent at idle. My biggest worry would be if it sped up with RPMs raised. Or if it was constant. It annoys me, but it does quiet down at times which makes me believe it’s not something broken. If it were constant I’d have it looked at. It does sound a little louder than mine does. But it’s hard to tell from the vid

Probably just the fuel injection cleaning cycle.

Can anyone verify - is the timing chain and tensioner inside here? I have a metalic tap and have identified the noise is coming from this location.

The cams are behind the plastic covers...at least that's my guess.

    Cheers
