    No engine will truly swap into the truck without massive amounts of work.

    If you wanted to do a Diesel swap, I recommend using a 1KZ-TE Toyota Diesel engine. They mount directly to the A340E/A340F automatics and I believe some Manuals since they came on the Hilux Prado and Surf. Wiring and fabrication is a whole other story though...

    If you choose to do an engine swap, you're look at several months if not a year of downtime. It takes a lot of time.

    Yes I know it will be labour intensive and this is a bush buggy for me so not a daily driver!
    More then likely I’m going to rebuild the motor that inside of it but would like to look at a engine swap before I start
    I’m just wondering if anyone has put a Diesel into a first gen Tacoma and what they used

    Cummings r2.8, they should mount to toyota r and w serious transmission but idk how well a w will hold up to it. It also only weighs about 500 pounds

    Not ever owning one i cant tell you much about it, but its the engine i would get if i did a cummings swap.

    Totally would do this if it didn't cost like, what, $12,000?

    @madmax700r is doing a 4BT Cummins swap.
    @anothernord did a Diesel 1KZ-TE swap.

    4bt are cool just they weigh over 800 pounds and are a bigger, only reason i wouldn’t want one in a small truck like ours.
    But they are dirt cheap which is a plus , r2.8 turbo is like 9k.
    But thats just my .02$, the 4bt toyotas ive seen videos of have all been pretty cool

    I am swapping a 4bt in my 98. It’s in there. Just been busy with other things but it fits just fine. And it’s not quiet 800 lbs. and if your swapping a diesel you shouldn’t worry about weight. Your getting so much torque you wont even notice.

    Please keep me updated on your build this is the option I am considering it might be something I buy and build first before pulling out my 2.7 but for now I believe rebuilding my head will get me back on the trails sooner

    It’s been awhile since I’ve updated it since I’ve been working on other things but here’s my build thread.

    Agree and from the numbers it doesn't seem like a lot of gains either. Would almost need to go with the common rail. Looks like you have a good choice in the 4bt. I've got the 6bt in my dodge and it's not lacking for power. Would be great to have a cummins in my tacoma! If the 3.4 goes I'll be asking the same questions as the OP

    The Mercedes OM617 is a nice option for the 80s era trucks. 5 cylinder short stroke TD. A "million mile" motor but not much as far as after market tuning.

    The 1kd-FTV is a common rail I believe. But it only makes around 170hp260trq. Don’t quote me on those numbers. And I know for a fact my 4bt makes 105hp and 265 Trq stock. But 4bt peak torque is like 1800rpm or somthing ant the 1kd-FTV is at 3200rpm or somthing.

    Doesn’t matter tho. All about what you want to do with your truck.
    I wanted insane low end torque to turn big a$$ tires on a dime. I got that. Will it be fast? Maybe idk probably not. Is my plan to make it fast no? Am I building mine for fuel mileage? no, smiles per gallon is more like it.

    All about you guys. It’s your money, your truck, I’ll just provide my experience with it. And most of all. Have fun with it. But don’t pay $30k+ just to have a diesel. That’s insane.

    That is a super cheap reliable swap!
    My only issue with that swap is those things may last a longggg time but you have to piss rev the shizz out of them to get them to move a slightly lifted truck in a decent manor.
