Hey guys. Although I love the 3.4 on our 1st gen Tacomas. Let's be frank it's missing alot of power.

I was curious is there other Toyota engines that can be swapped to give the 1st gen Tacoma more power under the hood?

Like for example the Dual VVT-i 1GR-FE in 2nd gen tacomas can they be swapped into a 1st gen Tacoma?

I'm just curious to see. Yes I've seen the V8 swap but that seems like too much engine in a small space.

    Now I think the 3.4 has more then enough Horse Power ! Drive a 22Re in a 4x4 .

Just what is your end game??

Why not Super Charge or Turbo Charge??

The engine limits are determined only by the size of your budget.

You want Horse Power lots of after market support go with a Chevy Engine.

I'm just curious that's all. Which chevy engine are you talking about? I would like to research it.

I did think of getting a supercharger. The only issue is that I would be limited to premium fuel.

I've been lately contemplating a trip from Arizona to Colombia. My guess is that most of these central American countries will not have premium fuel? Or maybe I'm wrong.

I don't recall seeing premium fuel when I was in Colombia.

Or can I use regular fuel on a supercharged engine?

For that trip diesel would be a better choice.

And no engine swap with a different engine than it came with, and no form of boost, will be cheap.

Do you have a big budget?

I second Diesel any trip south of the border.

As for Chevy Engines It comes down to what you need done to pass emission tests in your state

It would need to pass the test for the vehicle it is installed in.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
eventually (not in the near future) i plan on attempting a 3.5l or 4.0l dual vvti swap. those engines open the ability to add the FJ Transfercase with the 6 speed (so full time AWD with a center locking diff)

@Bandido did a 2gr-fe swap in his first gen. he used an -FE block. i plan on bastardizing an -FSE block

i just cant bring myself to stick and LS in one of my trucks

Yeah I figured. But I've read that most people recommend older diesel engines that will take cheap diesel fuel, as newer diesel engines rely on ultra low sulfur diesel.

My budget would be no more than $7,000
I was thinking if it's way more than I would just spend $20k-$30k tops on a imported hilux truck. But I love my 2003 Tacoma. I've done alot on the truck from suspension to conversion to 4x4.

I was just wondering if someone has done such a conversion.

Or maybe better yet a diesel conversion with a toyota diesel engine not a vw.

3.4 might be lacking in power but if something goes sideways while you're out of the country finding parts might be easier than with mix and match swapped drivetrain parts

I hear with the anti rejection drugs the LS swap is bearable !!

I also feel it is just not right!

Very true. It is a well built engine with availability in parts world wide. Maybe I'll do some more research around in regards to quality of fuels used in central and south America. To see if premium is widely available that way I can go for the supercharged kit.

But in reality my post was more out of curiosity if someone has swapped newer gen Tacoma engines into 1st gen Tacoma. I have not seen posts like that.

That would be very interesting to see. I know the 4.0 weighs by almost 50-100lbs less than the 3.4 I just wonder the dimensions of the engine, and electronics component.

    Speaking about superchargers.

I found a TRD supercharger with 90k miles pf use for $2,700.

Is this reasonable? Or too much.

electrically things are easy to deal with.. its making mounts and figuring out the exhaust that sucks.

i've got a 2011 sienna 3.5l in my 1993 mr2.. its ~25 wires to make it all work and an extra relay for AFR heaters

I just wish there was a 6speed manual transmission that bolts up to the 3.4 where the extra gear is a higher overdrive for highway cruising.

You can rebuild your transmission and have a higher 5th gear installed at the same time. That’s what I’ll do when the time comes.

    On the R150F?

I can't rebuild a transmission but I can certainly bring it to someone who can.

When you have the fabrication and electrical skills it makes these projects so much easier.

I wish I had managed to finish my 85 Celica 4x4 all the parts are gathered .:annoyed::annoyed:
