So normally I'll run with windows and sunroof open but when I throw the auto temp (because Florida) on the engine will shutter randomly. I only notice it at a red light, figured it was something to do with the compressor, none of my previous vehicles. Is this a normal thing or not so much? Any input is welcome.

100% normal, the. Engine kicks up the RPM to make the compressor more efficient at the same time as it applies the load so it feels a bit jerky. Even my 1993 Land Cruiser does this haha

Yep, same here. When it starts vibrating at idle, shift into neutral and back to drive and it'll stop for a bit.

Mine does it for sure at red lights. You'll get used to it. Sometimes it feels like a misfire.

Mine has the same issue, pretty bad vibration at idle when the a/c compressor kicks on. My truck was into the Dealer and I brought this up to them, said it normal which blows my mind as it's quite aggressive.

This example is more for higher mileage cars but idling super low or almost stalling can be a sign that the compressor is struggling to turn. They can seize up from lack of lubrication, the mag clutch bearings can fail.. Sometimes I've seen a cooling fan (viscous, electric) fail and cause hi pressures in the outlet side of the compressor..

But you take it to the dealer and they just tell you it's fine/normal. I think they are just hoping that your two year warranty runs out before the part breaks and then you have to pay out of pocket to replace what was going bad in the first place.

I don't care what everyone says, including the dealer, what my truck does, no truck should do. Normal or not.

I'm assuming by "shutter" you aren't referring to how an engine may "shudder" as it is about to stall. A prime example is when someone who can't drive a stick shift kills the motor trying to put it into gear. If the engine was truly shuddering I'd suggest you return the vehicle to the Toyota dealer for repair.

If you simply mean that you can feel the sudden change in RPM as the A/C compressor kicks in then I'd say I'm surprised you've never noticed this before with any other vehicle you've ever driven.

I assume that's what you meant by the incomplete statement, "none of my previous vehicles."

This is my issue and I know it's normal for the rpm to increase when the compressor kicks on but the amount my truck vibrates when this happens is not normal. It vibrates the entire front of the vehicle enough to where it can be felt outside, say touching the mirror. None of the 10+ cars I've owned have had anywhere near this much vibration with the a/c on.

All my Toyotas have done this. I've had a few, you'll notice your ac actually works well too because it's so aggressive. My old Ford kicked the AC on and off rapidly but never got that cold and couldn't even be felt.

Mine kicks the compressor on and off every 15 seconds or so when idling, normal?

Yea that's normal.. I think the newer A.C. systems are running less refrigerant (its expensive and harmful to the emvironment) at higher pressures attempting to achieve the same cooling perf. You can definitely feel when the clutch engages

Newer systems run R134a which is not a chroloflorocarbon and much less effective than the old R12a so it needs to build high head pressure and then relieve it for more effective heat transfer. Rapid cycling is common. I love my Land Cruiser because it still has its R12A charge and it gets so much colder than my properly set up Tacoma.

My compressor kicks on and off all the damn time. No, the vehicle doesn't stall. My wife commented the other day that the A/C blows cool air but it isn't COLD.

    Toyota says all is normal.

Underworld Flex trifold, tinted, TRDPRO grill, TRDPRO shift knob, etc,etc
This happens on mine at times also and got my attention (concern) at first thinking the compressor might be showing early signs of failure. But after searching and analyzing it all, I came to the conclusion that it maybe "normal" for this engine as it puts out lower torque at low rpm than I'm used to from the 4.0 and all the other power plants I've owned.
The vehicle never has stalled and it's only at the very low rpm when torque is likely to be at its lower point that this occurs.
And unfortunately Toyota in its infinite wisdom took away the A/C sight glass for checking the R levels just like the ATF dipstick, so Instead of hooking up the A/C gauges and risk contamination I called it a day problem solved for now by attributing the issue to the lower rpm torque output which is "normal".
But If later I find it (A/C compressor) to be a problem, I'll be very pissed!

    Hope that helps!
    Cheers!
