2021 ORDCSB MT I have about 12,000 miles on truck. Driving home from the mountains of West Virginia to Maryland. I put the transmission in neutral as I was going down a steep decline. Probably doing around 80 mph when the engine shut off. Pulled to the side and restarted no problem. Next decline I did it again and the same thing happened. Needless to say I didn't try anymore. Anyone heard of or had this happen?

Why are you putting a vehicle in neutral while it coasts?

If you wish to control speeds while descending, you normally go into a lower gear.

Its a manual transmission so why not?

I wasn't trying to control speed. It was the perfect descent to simply coast.

Regulating speed, for safety reasons to start off with.

Safety should be your number 1 priority.

Burn less fuel in gear then coasting in neutral? I think not.

Unsafe to coast down a hill? Please explain.

Engine management cuts fuel on decel in gear. Idling uses fuel.

Thanks for the safety meeting but I have been driving for 40 years. Let's stick to the topic if possible.

Same thing happened to me, my oil catch can unscrewed itself. Probably not your problem though

the fuel shuts off when you are coasting in gear. and in neutral you are actually putting more wear on your transmission because instead of the torque converter slipping, the internal clutches in the transmission are slipping. The ECU will actually shift to neutral automatically if necessary (like stopped at a light).

    this isn't a 1980s truck.

I've coasted down long hills in neutral that were just right to hold the speed that I wanted and the engine just purred along at idle. Interestingly per the display, this yields better mileage because those hills still take some throttle when in gear to maintain speed. Coasting in gear had too much engine braking.

It might be a difference between the non-TSS-P and TSS-P Tacos? I know that for the TSS-P ones (2018+), folks can shift gears and it will keep CruiseControl engaged after the shift.

IIRC, it was around 5% or 6% grades at about 65mph or 70mph where things balanced nicely.

Nope, and this is the first time I've heard of it.
Not apples to apples, but my truck is a '19 MT with TSS.
I rarely coast downhill in neutral though, FWIW.
