Was told I need a vacuum pump but I am not sure if the dealer is just saying that because there was a note about it/recall on some of them. Anyone else feel like their engines sound like a diesel when idling?

These engines do sound “dieselish” even when they have no issues. I suspect it’s the sound of the direct injection, which is also part of what makes the sound of a Diesel engine what it is.

I had the same feeling with the diesel sound, thinking even there was a problem with the exhaust. Is your truck brand new and v6? It might settle in a bit because i don't know if i've gotten used to it or it's not as loud anymore. Since everything runs fine and two people from different Toyota dealers said everything sounds normal, it's probably just normal.
But now after my first oil change from the dealer i have a whistling sound on occasion when i accelerate. WTF? I really hate bringing my truck into the dealers, i always feel they'll loosen a bolt somewhere so i'll have to come back. I think from now on if i cant FEEL something wrong im going to assume it's a normal truck noise, because the alternative is constant visits to the dealership which for me is 100 miles away.

The truck is about a year old now and it has 20k miles so it has had 2 oils changes. It actually seems much louder than it was when I got it, to the point where a few of my friends asked why my truck was so loud. I am going to get the vacuum pump replaced on Monday and I will keep you guys posted.

Mine is brand new (3 weeks old) and has that hint of a diesel sound too. It's also WAY louder than my 07 4.0. So much so that I'm considering putting in sound dampener, even more so considering the CAI and new exhaust I'm planning on.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.

    It's under warranty though...

Sorry, I didn't get the TSB but I can call them tomorrow to get it. The part number however is 293000p040.

That sound is normal. Don't get carried away and replace perfectly fine parts or waste money on insulating unimportant noises that have no effect on vehicle reliability.

Sounds like a bucket of bolts compared to older engines. I think high conpression, DI, timing chain, and lack of hood liner contributes to it. Doesnt bother me since "its a truck".

I'm more concerned about why I need a vacuum pump on a one year old truck

That whistling sound is normal. My 3rd and 2nd Gen do it too. You probably don’t hear it when the A/C is off?

You probably don't. You might need a high pressure fuel pump which is under TSB as being defective. Even still I think this is a early production issue. Need more details OP

If it chirps like loud crickets and sometimes even sounds like a belt whining and slipping, it's likely the HPFP. I was SO glad they finally came out with a TSB for this. I have about 4k on my new HPFP and the chirping has yet to return... the diesel-like clicking is normal for these engines though. self cleaning injectors, DI, etc., and that doesn't bother me at all. sounds like a truck...

I couldn't handle being embarrassed at a drive thru or sitting in traffic with my truck sounding like a 300,000 mile beater that wasn't well maintained!
