The engine seems to rev a bit before it shifts into 3rd gear, any thoughts to this

What speeds, road terrain, etc are you experiencing this?

Also, have you checked the transmission fluid level? My 2016 came from the factory a quart low. Shifted better after bring the fluid to the proper level.

Also, did the shifting problem start recently or has it done it from day one?

That sounds like normal behavior for an automatic transmission especially if you are using a lot of skinny pedal; albeit modern autos have gotten better in this regard. An automatic transmission has a device called a torque converter that allows a partial disconnect between the engine and the transmission. This allows it to sit still while in gear and to shift gears without the need of a clutch like with a manual transmission.

While the transmission is performing a shift, the engine is disconnected from the wheels but the throttle is still open (unless you let the skinny pedal up), so the rpm on the engine rises. I suspect modern cars cut the throttle during shifts and/or the shifts are faster such that this behavior is not as pronounced.

How many cars with an automatic transmission have you driven?

your rpm shouldn't rise between shifts in an automatic, thats referred to as a shift flare and it a concern that should be dealt with soon.

Also typically auto's pull back ignition timing to allow the engine speed to drop during a shift.

Alot (not all) manuals will do the same thing when you step on the clutch, some more aggressively than others. It's usually only noticeable when you're lightly accelerating as when you're hard on it the timing retard wouldn't be enough to allow your rpms to fall for an upshift

Timing retard? My guess is that modern cars cut the the throttle. I don’t think timing retardation would have a large enough effect on an unloaded engine. I’m just guessing though. Albeit it’s a semi-educated guess.

The truck is intuitively revving to compensate for the power loss once it gets into 3rd.

When did trucks start having intuition? Is the AI apocalypse upon us?!

    What rpms do you see?

Typically you would see 100-150 rmps drop during the upshift event.

I looked at some techstream logs and see that in 2nd gear rpms are at 1700-1900 range at 11-14 % of accelerator position before the upshift . The speed is below 20 mph

The ignition timing is not being pulled during the upshift per techstream logs

It’s more noticeable on cold starts, once driven a couple minutes seems to shift normally

It’s a new truck, drop it off and let them drive it cold.

No money, all went to truck...
I have a manual. My truck always revs before 3rd gear. Cause I rev it.
