2000 TRD here, Located in Boulder, CO. Looking for a replacement engine and someone to swap it in for me.

I have a guy here in town who does great work on old toyotas but he can't find me an engine.

Anyone have advice? If I were to buy a donor, I would blow my whole budget I think. People around here are asking big $$ for these trucks.

Help me save my favorite vehicle ever!

Thanks for that. Will add, I'm looking for a reman or new engine if that exists. Don't want to pay all that for an engine with 200k on it.

I got a motor from JDM Engine depot. I guess they import motors from Japan due to strict emission laws. Emissions Laws force them to replace engine every 60,000 Miles. I bought an engine from JDM and had it machined and rebuilt immediately. I never ran the engine as is. I rebuilt it because if I'm going to do all that work to swap the engine, I might as well make sure the engine is on point. Total rebuild cost roughly 1500 on top of the initial motor purchase. How many miles did you have on your engine?

256k or so on it. Poor compression and a history of trouble codes that I couldn't seem to resolve. It also needs a clutch. Am I making a bad decision?

    Perhaps .

just what codes that would be a big help.

    Perhaps a leak down test?

Have you ever checked the valve adjustment ?

it would hurt to replace an engine for something minor.

Can’t say if it’s a bad decision or not.
Seems like the 3.4 engines can last a long time with good maintenance. Although like anything some don’t make it.
I was just curious if the mileage.
Good luck in whatever you decide.
Lots of people here can help.

I think valve adjustment on this motor should be preformed at 60,000 miles. This video is pretty good. Huge compressions boost on cylinders that had horrible compression. 3 cylinders were ~90 psi and boosted to ~200 psi after adjustment. I wouldn't blame you if you swapped motors, but people get 500,000 miles off original motor.

It's got a bad knock sensor or the wiring for it is bad. Another code I can't recall right now related to evap system. Rear main seal is leaking. Some other issues my mechanic mentioned.

He advised me that between all this, and the clutch, to go ahead and swap in a new engine while we're in there.

I don't have a good place to work on it, I live in an apartment with no garage right now. Plus, engine and clutch are things beyond my skill level/free time to tackle.

You all rock. You responded with the resources I asked for and then asked questions trying to get at the root of the problem. I love Tacoma world. Any further advice welcome.

    OME and worth every penny.
No such thing. Not done right anyway. Only Toyota could have the parts on hand.

Since your using a mechanic be very careful .

You might want to ask what happens if you get a bad engine? It can happen from any company.

I watched this happen Labor for 2 complete engine swaps on a warranted engine.

In the end the truck was sold not running wiring issues.

    Best of luck!

Do you have a local machine shop? If so have your mechanic pull the motor, have the machine shop rebuild it.
