My sister needs her 3.0 rebuilt, can those who have had a 3.0 or 3.4 chime in w/ how much labor and the rebuilt long block was? Curious if the quote she got was reasonable.

Does your sister have a Tacoma or just a Toyota truck? The Tacoma never had a 3.0L. I have seen a 2nd Gen T4R with a 3.4L swap, but it would require doing some major rewiring. All pre-Tacoma trucks with fuel injection are OBD1, and Tacomas only had OBD1 for 1995, so doig a 3.4L swap would likely require putting OBD2 components in the truck. It is my personal opinion that the 3.0L is probably the worst engine Toyota ever made in terms of performance and durability/longevity, and you probably better off putting a new block in...

She's got a '93 4runner, but thought some people might have numbers on their 3.4 which would be close, or experience with a 3.0 rebuild as well.

Her quote came in at ~$8k - 3500 for labor and 4500 for engine & parts.

The 3.0 V6 is a complete turd. It did you a favor. Find a 3.4. Have your local machine shop go through the 3.4. Install the 3.4. Everyone’s happy!

Yeah I tried talking her into a 3.4, but she loved the older ones... 3.slow they call it.

I assume a 3.4 swap would be way more expensive? I converted the AT to a MT when it let go last summer, so it's already a bit of a frankenvehicle.

You may need a new sister. Or…… downgrade to the 22RE 4 cylinder which is a great engine except for the timing chain guides, which is a very inexpensive modification.
    This is for a 4Runner?

Unless you put a big turbo on that 22RE. Or if she has the scratch (cash). Two words Diesel swap!

You could check LCE. They have 3VZ parts but no blocks.

I’ve seen boosted 22RE well over 700hp. Plenty of shove to move around the 4Runner.

People can not Give those 3.0 Engines away .

The ones I removed for swaps that ran decent when pulled went for scrap I could not give them away.

I remember years passed I swapped a engine in and out for $600.00 now labor to swap an engine is $3500.00.

I would only need one a month to be happy!

They’re gutless and unreliable. They love popping head gaskets.

    No. Actually it’s easier finding a 3.4 over a 3.0.

ORS sells a plug and play swap.

I’d rather burn a pile of money than use a 3.0. Tell your sister she’s being foolish and to listen to us. ;)

The best way is to by a complete donor vehicle lots of 3.4 3rd generation 4 Runners.

OP if you were close to me I would be glad to help with the wiring end of a 3.4 swap. Make your Cross over pipe if you go that route

No big deal to swap the intake and battery

I don`t know why so many think the wiring is hard it is pretty simple when you have the Electrical Diagrams for all the vehicles.

The engine swap is all pretty much Grunt work.

Good Luck No matter how it plays out.

Yeah, I would skip on rebuilding the 3.0L 3VZ too. I would try to find a 5VZ, 22RE, or even a 3RZ and do a swap. All 3 of those are easier to work on, as well.

Thanks guys, I agree and would definitely do the swap for her if I had the time. I converted her car to a 5 speed when her automatic cracked in half last year. (dumb shop forgot the crossmember bolts)

I'll have her ask the shop who quoted her 8k to quote out a 3.4 swap. Probably wouldn't be too much more.
