So, those of you with a tow package and a way to read engine oil temp, what kind of temps are you seeing in normal operation? My 2016 doesn't have the tow package and my temps read 260 to 280 degrees F once its done warming up. I install a trans cooler already and was wondering is it worth doing the oil cooler as well. My Tstat and pump housings have the ports for the coolant taps and the oil cooler can be got for like 300 dollars from a junkyard.

    Edit
So I'm going to install the cooler, will post again when its done with how my temps changed. I'm not in a rush to do it, unless someone wants to sell me a cooler cheap to get it off the ground.
    Parts
    o-rings 15710B (90301-67004), 15785 (15785-31060), 16692(15692-0P010)
Cooler part number 157100P020, 800$ new, getting used

In a wild twist, our engines do not have an oil temp sensor. It is a value calculated in the ECU. Go figure.

Yep. All OBD devices will report a CALCULATED oil temp. There is no actual sensor.

I have not monitored them in a long time, but they were all in a reasonable range. I have yet to tow more than 1,300lb, so no experience there.

Well the question still stands. Is the oil cooler worth it?

There is a small cooler just above the oil filter. But to directly answer, you'd almost have to measure the actual temps in order to know if you really need additional cooling.

Others folks might have different input.

The temp most likely works of the oil pressure, I would think its relatively accurate otherwise why have it at all. Mine at least seems to know when its hot outside, taking long or shorter to warm up based on outside air temp. How did you check yours?

Oil pressure is just a switch:

    upload_2022-8-17_13-29-15.jpg

I monitored mine over OBD with a bunch of other PIDs until this info was noted. Since, I gave up caring about oil temp, or at least what was reported to OBD.

Based on numerous techstream logs w/AT drivetrain, Oil temp is calculated based on AT temps.
During the normal Operation (long drive), all 3 temps (Oil, AT Pan, AT Torque Converter ) do match. All below 200°, 180-195 range. I posted a overlay of 4 temps on the similar thread a while ago and Oil temp trends AT temps

My trans temps run from 160 to 180 once I put my cooler on, and ,y oil temp runs at 260-280.

Well that's enough temp difference for me to do the install. Will post back with how it went and how my temps have changed. Thanks for the data.

How does it work when the truck is equipped with a manual transmission?

It would make more sense that oil temp is calculated off coolant temperature since it is tied to the engine. The AT temperature can vary quite a bit compared to engine temperatures based on load, gear, and mainly whether the TC is locked or not. The TC is where most if the heat in an AT comes from.

it's probably measuring the coolant temp

do you mean its calculating off the coolant temp? Cause 280* is pretty hot for coolant.

When I flew c172/153, the Upper limit (red line) was 245° on the air cooled engine. That's the only place I saw an old school oil temp gauge...
