Greetings, I'm gonna put this out there and see what other folks have to say about it. I recently bought an 08 Tacoma TRD Off Road, 4 liter V6 with 6 speed manual transmission 4x4. So, in my latent sorta gear head little mind. I bought a Toyota oil cooler kit for my truck. Not an after market external fluid to air but the Toyota setup that sits under the oil filter. The reasoning I used was that cooler is better, right? Then, I found this thread about oil from a member named Clearwater Bill, dated April 26,2017. In his post he talks about sump temps and the burning off of harmful contaminants and water from combustion, etc. So, I'm wondering if my logic of installing the stock cooler will beneifit the longevity of my truck. In addition of longevity I'm thinking that I will either get a little pull behind camper or a pop up camper. I also travel in the mountains all the time and from time to time haul not overly heavy things for work. So, give it some thoughts.
    Cheers, Jim

If you're worried about towing you'd want a transmission cooler, which, if your truck has a towing package, probably already has one. If you're overheating your tacoma there is something wrong.

Welcome to the site. As far as I know, all TRD already has that oil cooler that the filter sits on. Discussed on this thread.

Your oil cooler will be fine, they put them on all tow packages for a reason...it won't cool the oil to the levels where water won't dissipate from the oil. What Clearwater Bill is probably referring to are short runs etc., where the system doesn't get to proper operating temperature.

Does it have the factory tow package? If so your truck comes with the oil cooler from the factory. Manual transmissions do not come with or need trans coolers.

In cold weather this will also be an oil heater so go ahead and install it. There are no downsides

Ah, I forgot to included that it is a manual transmission. So, yes, there are no tranny coolers for a manual. I'm also aware that it does not have the tow package. Also, It isn't over heating in any way. Just looking to get as many miles out of it as I can. The picture of my 92 that I used in my profile had 443,000 on it when I sold it. If I had a place to keep it I would have kept it.

I had the same set up as you but it was a 1st gen. I towed all the time with no problem in the mountains.
A good receiver hitch and wiring harness and your set. I loved the manual in the Mtns.

I just looked at a couple of my factory sticker and tow package isn't part of the TRD package yet all the TRD trucks I've seen in my region has the tow package. So I guess you don't have the oil cooler. I don't see any harm in installing the factory one then.

I enjoyed driving my 1st Gen 5 speed with the 4:10 axles in the mountains. Maybe I'll get another...

When you want to tag someone in the future, do it like @Traveler2020 so they can see you are 'speaking' to them.

If you want to post a link to that tread, I'll look it over and comment if required. Things written to respond to a certain topic may or may not apply in all cases, so context is important.

That means I'm sitting up and breathing, right? :p Would have come in sooner, but just got back from 8 days in the eastern mountains of Cuba. I wasn't thinking much of TW while I was gone...........

I agree. The OE bit is a piece engineered for the vehicle. I've had several 4 cyl Accords and a Miata with a very similar style 'cooler'.

OTOH I'd probably not spend the money or effort to install one unless you classify your useage as severe duty.
