I just bought a 2006 Tacoma access cab and found out about this off the wall anti theft system. it seems to me like a good idea, however the indicator light never turns on and my truck starts just fine every time. my question is dose my truck even have the system installed or is there a way for me to check with out having to bring it to a dealership... thank you in advance!!

    Is your truck a V6?
I may not be remembering correctly but I thought the non v6 trucks before a certain year (2008 I think) did not have imobilizers.
This became a huge issue for some who were importing vehicles from the US to Canada as the Canadian law changed in Sept/07 stating that certain vehicles had to have an imobilizer.
Anyways, the above poster stated good advice, take a look at your key!

    Shawn.

I am just surprised that Toyota came out with a truck with no car alarm on it...

Ok, that makes sense from what I remember with regards to the imobilizers and engines.

I imported my truck in Nov/07 and I was concerned about the issue, but my truck was a v6 so I was ok.

I don't know for sure, but I would assume all trucks after 2008 would have them as I can't see them adding them just for Canadian trucks, but I could be wrong.

Look at the drivers door glass. Is theft deterrent the same as engine immobilizer?

Just got my 2014 Monday and when there was a few minutes break in all the signing action, I went to the service area and asked the first tech writer who to see about getting a couple extra keys. Without even looking at the key, he boldly stated that the key was (some expensive price) and that it would cost (another expensive price) to program it. Hmm. Said I'd think about it.

Looked in the manual, it has pictures of the two keys and there is a slight difference in the shape, but happily here there is a picture of exactly what to look for - thanks! And happily I don't have the immobilizer, so I can get a couple keys for a reasonable price.

But I wonder what option causes the immobilizer? There must be something. Surely Toyota doesn't just flip a coin and put it in some and not others.

I have no idea. I was just wondering if that indention actually did something, or if it is a symbol to tell you that you have some anti-theft system.

Edit: Indention keeps getting autocorrected to intention lol

    Indentation.

That would be a question to ask at the service desk maybe?

That’s what I was looking for

My key has a letter stamped on it, I was just curious about what everyone was talking about.

Has nothing to do with immobilizer function. It’s all about the chip in the rubber portion of the key cover
