Lately I have noticed that sometimes the engine turns over a little too quickly, and feels like engine misfired/detonation/piston slapping sound as it starts. It takes less than a second to start, like almost instantly as I press the start button.
Normally it takes about 1.5 seconds to crank. What could it be?
    Engine sounds normal otherwise

This is the first time I’ve ever heard someone complain that their engine starts too fast. 1st world problems. You could try pouring some sugar in the gas tank to slow it down. No guarantees. YMMV.

Its catching a cylinder right at the beginning of a compression stroke. Quick suck and bang, and you're off and running

Are you in a hot climate? Maybe the rotational drag is a little lower at cold start because the block is already warm-ish. I dunno

No no, adding sugar will make the engine more hyper.

You can try a nearly dead battery, I'm sure that will get slower cranking results.

Lol every 2gr-fks engine I ever owned feels like it takes forever to turn over. Not to mention it sounds like it’s struggling

    Any CEL’s?
Check for codes, or better yet, get to someone that can read codes and actually use the data.

Years ago where I worked a supervisor complained that the siren in her vehicle was too loud and the warning lights were too bright.

I occasionally experience the exact thing as the OP in my 20 OR and even started a thread about it and nobody could explain it. The above makes perfect sense to me, thanks for solving the mystery.

If it helps I live in a scorching desert environment (it was 121 on Sunday), and it definitely seems to happen more the hotter it is outside.

I wouldn't call it complaining, just curious what causes it. It doesn't sound normal when it happens.

These trucks have more Damn quirks than any vehicle I’ve ever owned . I can’t keep up with them all after owning 4 third gen tacomas. Between weird starting, rattles, random squeaks, vibrations etc etc between the 4 of them they all had different but similar personalities . Get used to it dude lol

They are like old wives. They gripe, b**ch, moan, complain, get hard to start, run too hot or too cold, eat too much, gain weight with each passing year [new doo dads and add ons], their looks fade, but we will still miss them when they are gone.

Friday jokes aside, I have experienced quite a few times. It started after I used some Royal Purple fuel cleaner and even had a rougher than normal idle for the next 1200 miles. I'd say 1 out of 4 start ups would be exactly as described.

It eventually stopped happening frequently, but every now and again it will crop up.
