Had new tires installed at dealership on my 2016 trd off road 60k miles. Just prior to bringing to dealer engine light and trac off light came on so I asked them to check. They diagnosed it as the charcoal canister at end of filler neck near gas tank. $850.00 + tax is this not covered under emissions, they say truck is over 50k, truck is paid love the truck so I will most likely do it. Just wanted some input some people say it should be covered under emissions.

    thanks

Knowing exactly what the issue is, you're ahead of the game to do it yourself. (And I say that without any knowledge of how hard it might be to do it.)

(I've been listening to the news lately and I've learned how to report on things without actually telling you anything about it.)

As an aside that's probably a bit late, are you packing your gas tank?

By pack I think you mean when it reaches full you squeeze more in, if so Always did since I owned it, they mentioned that to me at the dealership, Sounds stupid why that would ruin something but What do I know, AS for doing it myself I think I'll let them be liable for a screw up. I will research the warranty more I am in one of those states NY.

Yeah, I was referring to overfilling the tank. The problem with doing that is that it can send liquid fuel into the charcoal canister that's only meant for fuel vapors.

In New York, the charcoal canister appears to be covered against defects under the long-term coverage, so it might come down to them arguing owner neglect or abuse versus a defect in the part.

This is what normally kills Charcoal Canisters. I used to have a GF who drove a Lexus ES which had a Charcoal Canister go bad. The independent shop which replaced it told us it was likely due to over-filling the tank. I've heard the same from other sources as well.

The good news is the canister on a Taco looks like it would be fairly easy to access/replace. Bonus though if you can get it covered under warranty. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the good info I took mysubiewasalemon's advice and called corporate everything is covered under State emissions. This forum save me $1000.00 actually $924.00. It's amazing to me how a dealership can do that shit. The service manger called me 2 hours after I spoke to corporate to tell me they made a mistake and where looking at the federal emissions warranty info really WTF. Anyways thanks eveyone for the input it pays to be diligent.

I cannot be thankful enough for TW!! My 21 just rolled over 12k miles and the CEL came on. I was on a roadtrip in NM, coincidentally where I bought the truck. Dealer did a diagnostic scan and its a evap issue. They without hesitation said rodents and the tech even said my engine bay smells like rodent urine. I though bullshit. I will be better equipped now when heading to my dealer for the fix. Could be rodents but since I'm quilty of squeezing in extra the charcoal can is probably it.

An internet search for liquids thermal expansion might help you understand.
