    Ah. Got it.
I assume you’re lifted (?) and typically chains go on the rear tires. Should be plenty of of clearance, maybe. I don’t actually know because I’m not familiar with your truck. Put them on tight and drive slow...

I do know they make chains big enough for a 36” tire because I own a set!

nope not lifted just stock trd sport suspension. There should be plenty of clearance and maybe i'm just overthinking it since the chain specs were called out in the manual. Anybody have any experience with the following cables? I would think the ZT-747 would be easier to install since it has a tensioner. Curious to know why it is cheaper than the Z-579.

I think I might be confused. Are you running 37" tires?

Both of those cables look good. Hopefully you won't need them!

Chains go on the rear tires according to the manual. If you have the clearances specified for chains, they should work...but always test fit before you need them.

The tensioning system appears to be different on the two cable sets you posted. They also claim the more expensive cable system folds up smaller and allows for less clearance around certain components. I've used the cheaper cables previously...more info here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/who-has-tire-chain-recommendations.692627/#post-24495798

I can chain up all 4 wheels on my T100.
It sux they made such small clearance, front wheels, on the Tacoma.
What were they thinking .. if at all.

as someone who has never run chains, how much extra room would one need for chain clearance? for cables? etc

On what wheels? The manual outlines chain sizes that work with stock tire sizes on the rear. On the front there are reports from people using spacers to run chains. Toyota says don't run anything on the front, cables may work. See my other post.

I've got a stock TRD 2020 Sport, access cab with 17" inch wheels. I just bought two sets of Laclede tire chains not even thinking that there would be an issue with the front end clearance. I put them on today just to make sure they fit and I only had 1/2" of clearance between the chain and the front strut. Then I looked in the manual and they say that chains are only for the rear wheels. I can't believe that Toyota would design the front end of a 4WD truck that you can't put chains on. My works sometimes requires that I drive in a lot of snow and sometimes deep snow and have always chained up all 4 wheels. The stock tires are good summer highway tires, so I may have to get a set of All Season or Winter tires if I end up doing a lot of driving in the snow, and use the chains on the rear end... I thought about running 1/2" spacers on the front end but probably won't as I don't know how it would affect the drive.

My question is much more generic... with not much stock left, I just wanted an easy answer such as: "you need to maintain a XX inches of clearance around the entire tire" etc

Thread necro but I just watched this video and found it interesting.

I never, ever, thought I would say this but I'm going to order a set of Autosocks for my front tires to go with the rear chains.

I read cables don't fit either.

What engineers made chains not fit a 4WD truck...... ?
    (My truck is stock)

When I bought my truck, during signing paperwork, i was asked to sign a paper to not put chain in the front. I ask why? The guy said a 4Runner has chain in the front and the chain broke messing up the brake line and can’t brake (we both don’t know if the 4Runner has stock or bigger tires). After that incident, they make anyone who buy a 4wd from them sign a waver to not put chain in the front. I asked what about all their cars with FWD only? The guy said, In the manual, Toyota say what type of chain to use.

So I ask what if the chain on those FWD break, same situation as the 4WD if chain is apply in the front? The guy was like, yeah, it could happen. I wanted to ask more question but my kids wouldn’t allow me to lol.

If anyone here work for Toyota, I would love to know the real reason why too.

I was told the clearance is not there.
Break or no break, unless you modify the truck, they will not clear the front end.

I am not willing to try.

We don't need a factory rep. Just go out and run your hand around a front inside sidewall. You will probably be shocked at how little room there is between the knuckle and sidewall. With my 265/75-16s and raised letters inside the clearance at the closest point is only around 1/4". Probably less.
