Ill try to give you the short version of this story.
Coming home a few weeks ago on a 4hr road trip in which I averaged speeds of 85 to 90mph, my truck threw every warning light imaginable, lost power steering, but engine was still running.
Luckily I was at a manageable speed 35ish.
Pulled into parking lot shut truck off and back on everything cleared, and it drove like normal.

Brought to dealership ( the kept it about a week) they checked crank sensor it was good, but replaced the ECM.
Didn’t seem to really know if that was the problem or if it was fired.
But they had gone back and forth with Toyota and it’s what they recommend.

Truck has 31,000 miles and only mods are new speakers, sprint booster, spidertrax, Chinese pro grill.

Anyone else read about or have an issue like this?
I’ve seen things about ECU is that different than an ECM?
Forgive me if that’s a dumb question, mechanically limited.

If you have experienced with this, what should I know or be on the lookout for?

Worried because obviously I’m approaching the end of my warranty.

    Thanks for any helpful input.

To start off, let me tell you I have been in the mechanical field for over 7 years, certified in ATV, Outboard, and Sterndrive engines. I have had to replace three ECMs in that time. One was from the guy sinking his ATV in a mudhole and fried the whole electrical system. Another was a result of some other component failure which caused a fire on the outboard engine. The third was caused from a short in the coil pack harness, which backfed and shorted the ECM.
So, I am not saying that an ECM/ECU can not be bad on its own, however, its not likely. There is a good chance there is an underlying issue there. Also, the fact that the engine was still running and it started back up and drove like normal. The ECM/ECU is the engine control module or engine control unit, so for it to be bad and the engine still run, not likely.
How did they ¨check¨ the crank sensor? That would be my question to them. I see you have a 2016, what was your trucks build date?

Another person with a sprint booster had a similar failure as I recall. Dealership replaced ECU as well.

Ovtune has ran into early model 16 ECUs and throttle map changes he made as well. They may have problems with higher throttle input voltages.

Build date is 4/16 out of Texas.
Said there’s a recall on some crank sensor, mine didn’t fall under the ones being recalled.
Something about a dot being on them.

My concern was the sprint booster, but my efforts to search or google the problem only showed if it wasn’t properly snapped in all the way.

Felt like they were just taking a shot in the dark and hoping this fixed the issue.
Didn’t walk away feeling confident it wouldn’t happen again, especially before warranty runs out.

Bought the truck with 5500 miles on it and carfax was clean.

Should I lower the peddle response on the sprint booster or pull it all together?
Does that mean I shouldn’t do the OVtune if I pull the sprint booster?

    I agree.

It's possible the ECM just froze up like a computer, but I'm kind of the opinion that if the ECM failed, it wouldn't run until replaced. I would think the same about the crank position sensor. I guess it might be flaky, but IDK if I believe that. A bad ground or something sounds more likely.... mice in the engine bay?

My Frontier had a bad ECM. It ran fine other than was throwing a code for a PNP switch. I replaced the switch and it never had a problem with starting. Just threw a code for it, and no amount of resetting the codes would get rid of it. Always came back. Only after the ECM was replaced was it gone forever...so they can definitely be bad and still have the vehicle run.

My truck did this within the first week of owning it!!! Since then I've not had it happen I'm just over 10k
However after that initial "whatever the heck" Total shut down of everything including the power steering and all electric....I've had a speedometer tic to issue. I've had the combination meter replaced 3 times to try and remedy the issue, it's only done it in warmer temps. So I'll have to see if the third combo meter did the trick?

I haven’t had any other issues since the initial event.
The day after the event I drive it all day, before I could get it to the dealership.
They had it for 9 days, and I’ve had it back for 2 days.
Supposedly with a new “ECM” and stil nothing out of the ordinary.
The wondering and not knowing if this will happen again is what will eat at me for a while.

    Any update on this fix?
I had a really similar event happen to me this week. Coming back from a road trip and I had the engine light flashing, clearly had a misfire with inability to accelerate and the engine chugging. Had to tow it to the dealership and after a few hours of diagnosing, changing spark plugs, checking for cylinder pressure, valves etc, they come back that I have to have the ECM replaced. Luckily it is covered under warranty but I'm worried about it happening again as well
