ECGS Bushing + New Seal = Leaking Diff - HELP?! (NOW WITH SOLUTION)

    Need some help...

    I did the ECGS bushing and new axle seal on my truck about a month back. I replaced the seal as preventative maintenance since I had the CV shaft out.

    The replacement seal is an OEM part - 90311-47027, which is supposed to be the same as 90311-47012.

    The seal started leaking after a day or 2 to the point where there was a coating of gear oil on the under side of the truck.

    I figured the seal somehow got damaged when I installed it so I ordered another one and installed it. Its now leaking just as bad as the other seal. It not a small drip or 2, its almost like its pouring out of the seal. Its bad enough that I have a puddle of gear oil on the skids.

    I cannot figure out what I did wrong.

    I have a few questions....

    - I have the ECGS bushing installed like this -

    Is this not deep enough and causing the axle to not seat the whole way? Ive followed multiple DIYs online and some show it installed this deep, some show it installed deeper. Im worried Im going to drive it in too far and itll hit the spider gears.

    - Can anyone verify 0311-47027 and 90311-47012 are the same parts? I wonder if they arent? and the opening on the seal is too large for the CV shaft? Stupid me didnt slide the seal over the CV to make sure it fit tight before I installed it.

    - What exactly does the the round metal dust shield looking disk on the diff end of the CV axle do? Mine was bent when removing the axle. Ive straightened it back out and reinstalled it. Which way does it sit? Ive read this will cause the seal to leak if you install install it backwards. Does anyone have a name or part number for this piece?

    I plan on pulling the axle back out again for the third time tomorrow and trying to figure out what the hell is going on and I would like some insight before I do. Good news is Ive got it down to about an hour to pull and reinstall the CV axle.

    Ideally, I hope its something stupid and simple, but If I cant get it to stop leaking tomorrow, Id like to order another seal and dust shield thingy and start over. If anyone can provide the correct part numbers, that would be awesome.


    UPDATE -

    Problem solved. Bushing was in ass backwards.

    Solution / info -

    - Make sure the seal is installed properly. The spring faces the differential. The seal sits flush with the diff housing.

    INCORRECT -

    Driven in correct depth (flush with surrounding flange) and installed corrected (spring facing diff)

    Tips -

    - Use a 2" PVC coupler to drive the seal in. I used a 1.5" to 2" coupler - https://www.lowes.com/pd/Charlotte-Pipe-1-1-2-in-dia-PVC-Adapter-Coupling-Fitting/3132735 - to do mine. Easier to hold the 1.5" diameter and drive in evenly using a rubber mallet with a 2" diameter head on it.

    - OEM part - 90311-47027 - is the correct part number for the driver side seal.

    - This is the correct depth for the ECGS bushing to be driven in -

    The OEM PN for the shield is 41336-01010, I bent mind back into shape instead of replacing it.


    Ive currently have about 200 miles on the seal since installing it correctly with no problems.

    UPDATE - Roughly 1000 miles since reinstalling the seal, still dry.

    I think your bushing looks fine. I didn't change the seal when I did my ECG bushing and it's been fine.

    I know that doesn't help you but again, I think the bushing looks fine. Most sit a tad proud like that anyway.

    Did you overfill the clamshell, ie keep pumping once diff fluid overflows and installing plug prior to letting the flow slow down?

    Yes those part numbers are the same...I went through 4 seals at least lol.

    I had the same problem OP. It ended up been that the seal needed to be flush with the inner lip and not bottomed out. That helped me, just FYI.

    Thanks for chiming in guys. The original seal didn't leak with the axle, I kinda regret replacing it now since it was fine

    I never thought about the seal being driven in too far, but that make sense.

    It must be flush with the carrier. Use a 2" pvc pipe as a driver

    Thanks. I've decided against doing it today. It's too hot out, plus I wanna do a little more research on the dust shield thingy and order a spare seal so if it needs replaced again I'll have it when I pull it all apart. Ideally I'd like to replace that dust shield as well but I haven't found the part number yet

    Here's a thought op, is all the rust around the edge damaging the seal as it's being put in? In your pic it looks to me like there's a good 1/8" of rust inside the bore the seal sits in. Maybe your leak is from the seals' outer (diff) side, not the inner cv side. Clean that all up then install a new seal.

    I just ordered my ECGS bushing today, did you guys replace the CV axles too? Ideally I would want my axles to stay oem.

    My doors are the only stock things left besides the headlights
    Most likely you have the seal riven in too far, I've done this mod to a few trucks, if it's driven in too far they leak, flush with the carrier or a tiny smudge past the lip
