I saw a set of taillights on ebay from Headlight Depot for around $180 bucks.
Does this sound too good to true?

When it’s sounds to good to be true more than likely it’s garbage.I find most items on eBay are cheap Chinese knockoffs . Pay the extra money and buy from a reputable company that stands by their product .

What makes a good or bad tailight?

I have a pair of black hosing taillights for about 2 years. They are perfectly fine. Cost about $180 or so.

The fit to the body lines might be slightly off, and the lens water seal might not hold up. Ebay is pretty good with returns if something is "not as described". Best to pay with your PayPal account, cause they too will step in if needed.

I would not buy off Ebay. The shipping is crazy and you don't know what you get it till it is in your hands. I have had bad experiences with that site. just saying

Make sure they are CAPA and DOT certified and you’ll be fine.
Light Depot and TYC makes decent aftermarket lamps, I use them the time.

^Ah OK, basic aftermarket stock replacement tail lights, like what a collision shop would use if you broke yours in a crash. You can get them cheaper:
    https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=10386476&cc=3441741&pt=807
    https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=10386484&cc=3441741&pt=807

    Or here: https://www.amazon.com/Dasbecan-Housing-Compatible-81560-04170-TO2800203/dp/B09MCVSJYQ

These tail lights are simple plastic housings with incandescent bulbs. Nothing to go wrong.

ive been using ebay to buy and sell for 25 years, items can be returned, alot of sellers have free shipping, you have to look at what you are buying first and what country its in.
you probably got screwed because you wanted a super deal and it was a scam
shipping is a rape to YOU because you live in canada

+1. Over the years, I've bought 5 sets of tail lights and 4 sets of headlights across 4 vehicles from eBay. For aftermarket "upgrade" LED lights, eBay prices are lower than say, Tacoma Beast or Parts Engine, and you know what's in stock and what isn't. For Canadian shipping, brokerage fees and taxes are known ahead of time.

how does one make that leap?

there's sure a lot of hate in this thread for something that few seem to understand, so i feel some clarification is necessary:

just as a reminder, ebay is a sales platform that sellers utilize to sell products. the same goes for many products on Amazon as well. amazon values shipping speed, so they generally encourage sellers to allow them to stock items to increase the speed at which items can get to buyers, but prices as always are set by the storefront owners that sell within the amazon platform.

there are no products that ebay sells direct to consumer through the site. but there are plenty that use the platform to sell you or i parts at differing prices.

as such, the quality and price are not dictated by ebay in the least, and ebay leaves it up to the buyer to check and verify what they're getting before the purchase.

the original post doesn't offer enough information on the product, seller, or price point to indicate anything other than there's something on ebay for a set price. a single used but still good OEM housing could be in that listing,. it could also be a used and cracked housing, a brand new leaky cheap set of tail lights, or a scam for a brand new set of lights. the fact that the listing exists doesn't make it a good or bad deal at the point that you chimed in that ALL EBAY SUCKS!!!!11!!!1!1111!!

that really doesn't matter, as even the cheap aftermarket lights use the leftover/remnant molds that already had it stamped on there claiming compatibility, despite many designs obviously not meeting even the minimum output qualifications or salt bath test requirements to bear the stamp.

critical notation here is that the DOT light certification process allows any and all manufacturers to self-certify any lights they make that they meet the rules specified within FMVSS 108. DOT reserves the right to go back and verify that a company is self-testing and certifying to the proper standards, but in all reality, DOT is a government organization, and most companies that don't meet the minimum requirements will open, sell product, and close faster than anyone in DOT can even file the appropriate paperwork to begin the process to look into if the now-ghost-company was properly manufacturing lights to the specification required.

so while it's nice to claim, it's about as useful as eating beans to propel a hot air balloon.

now that we have an item listing, now judgement can be made. and i agree with @3JOH22A that for a new set of tail lights, they're not bad, but better options are available.

I would think there would be an abundance of OEM taillights on this site from the members that changed them out for the custom ones ? Didn't some get offered ?
I just used some very cheap Amazon corner lights for a friend of mines 2010 GMC Canyon, that did not care - and boy - they were great fit !!

I found a set of OEM tail lights locally on Craigslist.
However, the seller flaked on me on the last three weekends saying that he was too busy with work
to meet-up. Sounded kinda sketchy to me so I decided to pass. Would have been a good deal though.

    depends.

i've tried selling stuff, but it always falls apart in one way or another. if it's good condition and worth something, i'll generally keep it. if i definitely no longer need it after selling the truck or something, i'll post it up for a "free just pay shipping" thread, give it away to someone locally, or just plain throw it out.
