Ok, so I have a 2010 manual 4x5 sr5. I just got it a little over three weeks ago, so the last owner had this problem too I'm guessing. My driveway has a slight decline (for water to get to the drain) Since I've had it, I've had to use tire chocks to keep the truck rolling forward, hence why I made this thread. When I pull my e brake, it only goes out about 6-8 inches. I checked the adjustment area, and the left and right side barely pull at all. Me and my dad have tried cleaning out as much as we could off the entire brake assembly, manually tightening the brakes, and today I just took my right brake assembly apart, cleaned it and knocked off rust, and put it all back together, and nothing changed. I've tried squirting some wd40 where I could to see if it would do anything, and nothing. I'm completely stuck on this, and haven't found anything at all to help me out. I really want to avoid the shop as best as I can. Has anybody had experience with this, or anybody know what I could be wrong? Thanks for any input

Crawl under the rear and grab the cable at the backing plate.
If it pulls away from the plate the cables are shot.

I’m thinking you have a cable issue. They sometimes get all gummed up in their jacket and just won’t move. You got to remove them and replace or try to free them up...

Have you tightened up the adjustment under the console you looked at. I got into my console, then cracked the locking nut loose then tightened mine up until there was almost tension on the cable while the parking brake was not engaged. Now my parking brake handle only comes out 2-3 inches before engaging. Also I checked that my brakes don’t drag with the tighter tension on the cable. This drastically improved my parking brake. Before I adjusted my cable the handle would come out a solid 6 inches and the parking brake didn’t work nearly as well. This worked for me. Good luck.

I tugged on it when I pulled the break apart. The right didn't budge at all, but the left did move when I pulled off the cap brake thing (not sure what its called) but when i put it all together, the left side went back to not working. So I'm guessing the right side would be shot

Yeah, it was one of the first things I tried after trying the manual adjustment to the rear breaks. Still didn't work that much :/

Try setting the parking brake then pumping the brake petal with the vehicle running. Sounds wild but I’ve had luck with this in the past on a 1st gen tundra. Not sure if the systems are setup similar but I repeated this motion a few times and gained better feel to the parking brake.

Edit: Just read your previous reply that one cable seems to be froze up. So what worked for me may be irrelevant

check the adjustment under the center console too. you can pull the drum off and see if the shoes are engaging when you apply the e-brake, to see if it's a problem with the cable or the shoes.

Most common problem I've seen with Tacoma e brakes is the pivot pin on the arm that pivots half in and half out of the drum gets corroded. Pull that arm assembly off, pull the e-clip and tap out the pin. Polish the rust off the pin & the inside of the hole, load it up with never-seize & put it back together.
Did that on my '90 & my '01 and expect I'll have to do it on my '14 before long.

What procedure did you use to adjust the rear brakes?

Use this from the service manual it should make a great difference:

    The 05 up are different.
They don’t have the bell housing.
It’s the fitting where it goes thru the backing that plate splits.
At least that’s what happened to mine. I could pull the cable away from the backing plate.
