    The regular ones have paraffin wax, and vegetable oil but they do apparently have a "roasting log" that is made to cook on.

    I use them in the fireplace when I'm feeling lazy- toss it in and light it, place real logs on top and close the screen. They make small "fire-starter" bars as well and I keep a couple of them in my camping box.

    Get a hatchet, find a local source for small bundles of fire wood, cut/split kindling, build a small, real fire. Use larger pieces of real wood to build and maintain a small fire. Don’t deplete the local environment. Going with a Duraflame log may be the best way in your case.
