    Does anyone know how to wire in Dual Color Switchback Bulbs for DRL/Turn Signals

    Hey Tacoma Electrical Wizards, Got a challenge here. My 2012 Tacoma has the amber DRL. I really would like to change them to a dual color switchback bulbs. White DRL with amber Turn Signals. I got the LED Bulbs and Resistors for hyper flash. I have run into some issues with the 4157 bulb and socket. Was going to convert the socket to 3157 which I thought would be no problem. It turns out the Tacoma uses the same input crt (bright element) for both DRL and Turn Signal when Headlamps off.
    When you turn the Headlamps on, the input crt changes to the dimmer element of the bulb for Park Lamps(DRL turn off) and continues to use the bright element for Turn Signals (like what I need for switchback bulbs to work).
    Switchback bulbs require 2 independent crt to work correctly. Is there a way to change the DRL crt out put so it uses the the dimmer bulb element crt. and the Turn Signal continues to use the bright element crt. with headlamps off. (like a normal 3157 crt.)

    I have a very good working knowledge of auto electricity. I am a 20 year auto tech. I just have no access to Toyota Schematics.

    Hope someone can help. Scott

    DRL FB LED Update.
    I got my Flash Back LED's working. No need to swap out DRL Relay and Harness (didn't work anyways. 2012 wiring is different).
    I got a hold of Tacoma 2012 Schematics, researched and did this procedure.
    I explose the back side of the Diver's Side Interoir Juction Block. Locate the White, 12pin, M1 Connector which is plugged into the backside of the Juction Block. I, rather than cut the wire, disconnected the M1 Connector and with the proper Terminal Removal Tool, I pulled the #10, light green&red wire terminal from the connector. Taped it off so it can always be reinstalled if needed. This disables DRL's. Now you have manuel control of your lighting.
    The result is: No Headlamps, Park Lamps or DRL's in off mode. The only way to run your White LED "DRL" is in Park Lamp mode (only thing is that your Outer Marker Lights will be on also (but I can live with that). They will always stay white even in Headlamp on mode. Your Outer Marker Lamps are now "Park Lamps". When you signal left or right the FB LED's will switch and flash amber. They also will flash amber when Hazards on turned on.
    It works for me. The Super White LED are really nice looking when on and no more annoying HOT amber bulbs to distort my lenses. FB DRL's can also be turned off by simply switching HeadLamps to off mode.
    Thats what I did. Hope it helps.

    Scott, you have answered my prayers. I have been trying to get my switchback leds to work forever now and I think this may be the solution. I will try it this weekend. Im not too experienced but im hoping it is easier done than said. The detailed instructions hopefully appear the same in my '13. Any pics of these wires? thanks

    A bit of information that I have gleaned from the time I have been working on LED conversions. This is specific to many vehicles, but does include the Toyota Tacoma.

    Standard switchback LED's do not work on the Tacoma as designed. You have to get the 3157 CK type 2 LED switchback bulbs to work properly because for whatever reason Toyota, in their infinite wisdom, have their 3157 sockets wired differently than most other manufacturers. This is from one of the distributors that I have contacted. Now take into account this is information from THEM, so don't take this as gospel truth here.

    "If you own any of the following Toyota vehicles like the Camry, RAV4, 03-08 Corolla, Highlander and all Tundras/Tacomas, don’t use the standard type 3157 bulbs. Please selects the CK type 3157 bulbs."

    I might be missing something but, can disconnecting "the #10, light green&red wire terminal from the connector" and taping it off disable my DRL without the need to change the bulb and still have parking lights?

    So if the 3157 CK type bulbs are purchased will they work without removing the DRL wire? I want to use the switchback LED bulbs but in not willing to lose my DRL.

    No, switchbacks will not work without disabling the Drl. I think there is a mod you can do to the flasher relay involving taking it apart and shaving down some solder but it seemed too much work for me!! I personally had to cut the wire as the op suggested.

    It will work without disabling the DRL's. I have the below listed switchback LED's in Amber with CK wiring. This is the best deal on these AND they work better than the guy that sells the $90 bulbs here on Tacomaworld.com **I DID do the mod on here somewhere that allows me to disable the drl's with the wiring DIY in the fuse/relay, but it does work.
    I have a 2012 Tacoma. What is awesome about the ebay bulbs is that they are not on when I don't have the drl switched ON on the steering column lever/switch, but when I turn on to just the 1st turn (or DRL mode) the white lights come on. Then when I use the turn signal it turns to amber and then when it switches off it goes back to the white LED after about 2 or 3 seconds. It looks WAY better and works way better than the guy that sells the $90 LED CK wiring bulbs on this forum for Tacomas. His didn't do any of that. I have had the same pair for over 2 years and they haven't burned out yet. I do have load resisters installed and they only get used or HOT when the turn signal is on - so it's good!

    You need to fully describe how you moded the DRL'S to allow operation. Do you have a link to your work? Also do have a video of the lights in operation?

    There is a thread on here somewhere that show's how it's done. Tried to find it, but this forum is loaded with junk and it doesn't search well. Some info below and no video.
    Here's my pic of what the wiring setup looks like on my 2012.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/leds.376343/

    I got my led bulbs on ebay - NOT from the guy on this board CSJumper?? The one's here on this board were way more expensive. They also may work different. The reason I cut the DRL wire under the dash is that on my 2012 Tacoma the drl's come on when the truck engine is on and when the steering column switch for lights (both drl and headlights) is in the OFF position. Toyota does this for safety reasons - I guess - as the amber lights will be on when running or when in first position on knob. Since I cut my green wire under the dash my drl's don't come on when the truck is running (though without they are ON and AMBER colored. Thus I can turn on my lights to the first position on the steering column knob (drl position) and they will light up WHITE and not amber - as they will with a "normal" modification. I like the look of having WHITE LED's on when driving the truck without the headlights ON (but the drl's are ON in white - in first position on stick/steering knob) - without it they would be AMBER because the DRL module over-rides it.
    It's kinda confusing.

    Something I really don't want to do is cut my DRL wire under the dash. I also don't want to have to turn my headlight switch to the first position to get the LEDs to come on. I would love a set up that would allow the switchback feature and the DRLs would come on after start up.

    i have a 3rd gen tacoma and just installed switchbacks hoping my drl would be white instead of amber but they are only white when the headlights are on and amber when only the drl are on. would this mod be the same for the 3rd gens

    Can you describe in detail, your process? This is truly the first description of how I have wanted my SB's to function. This is basically what the $150VLED setup is.
    Turn Signal Stem on Column as follows:

    Off=Off
    DRL=White
    Parking=White w/cornering lts. on
    Headlights=White
    Left/Right Signal=Amber Flashing

    Is this how you are describing? If yes, this is my answer. And no, I don't mind cutting anything. Hell, I'll add a birds nest of wires that get tangled in my clutch pedal and on my feet causing serious hazards to other drivers if thats what it takes!
