I have a thread going in the 2nd gen area about a running a second alternator. I have made a bracket assembly that will allow you to add a second GM style 370+ amp hairpin to your 4.0L engine. I posted pictures and details in that thread.

    Here:https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/dual-alternators-for-4-0l.728102/page-2#post-25940779

I am trying to gauge interest to see if I should start making the setup and offering it for sale.

What do you guys think? I want to have honest opinions tell me everything good and bad. I do not want to invest in this if there is no interest.

I will post pictures of the system this is powering tonight.

Nice idea. Interested if the bracket doesn’t end up costing an arm and a leg. What material did you use? Looking at your other thread it’s hard to see much. What belt is needed for this system? I would plan on sourcing my own alts.

I used .250" thick 304 Stainless plate and spacers for mine.

I could have brackets and spacers built out of mild steel or stainless.

I built the setup so that a non custom belt could be used. The belt was $22 and in stock at a local O'Reilly's auto parts down the street from my home.

I do not plan on offering the Alternator. Here is a picture of the housing I used for mock up and the Auto tech part number. This Alternator model fits most 2005 and up GM trucks and SUV's.

Mechman, Auto Tech Eng, DC power, and many others offer this GM model in many flavors.

Here are some pics. Specs are 4 15" MMats Juggernauts in a 31cuft series tuned 6th order. The amps are only mocked up in the pictures. I have been running it with a MMats m3000.05. My wife is an artist. She painted it.

I will post more details later.

@turbo598 would I be able to use my stock alt in conjunction with my mechman? That would be most cost effective for me.

I tried to do exactly what you want to do first. I installed my DC power alternator and had my factory 130A alternator sitting around. I used my old alternator in the beginning to mock up everything and had 2 major issues.

The first issue was the long mounting ear with the 2 bolt holes pushed the alternator to far away from the engine block. I had very little clearance around the alternator and a custom belt would be needed to make it work.

The second issue was the location of the electrical connections. You can not access the wiring after the alternator is mounted without taking everything apart.

The DC power alternator had the ability to change the clock position of the electrical connections because the back housing mounting ear was a separate bracket that could be moved. The factory alternator and yours have the rear mounting ear part of the casting. You can not change the clock position of the electrical connections using a factory cast rear housing.

Making the GM Alternator fit was not easy either. Between mocking up both the original alternator and GM alternator, I must have taken off and put back on my supercharger belt/tension bracket, power steering pump, and factory drive belt 30 times.

Install your Mechman. You will be very happy. When I replaced my factory alternator with my DC power it made a huge improvement.

Once you have some info on pricing I can give you a more accurate gauge of how seriously interested I am. I would consider it for under $300 in a professional presentation. Any more and I would have to find some truck parts of mine to sell lol

side note.. Should I still use a .5 amp diode to boost charging voltage closer to 14v with the mechman? I’m going to replace UH battery with agm (possibly delete) and run 40-80ah of LTO batteries. Getting to the last critical part of my build by finishing off the sound system so I don’t have to open that can of worms again in this ride.

So I’m really interested in this. I also am pushing over 8k watts on my subs. I already have a 350amp alt, but I also have my stock alt laying around. Ik you said you couldn’t use the Toyota alt due to the mounting ears. The problem is I don’t want to get my alt recased in a GM housing. I wouldn’t mind getting a junk yard GM alt to run my vehicle electronics aside from my audio power, but then leads the problem of the Oem alternator connector on the driver side instead of down by the GM alt. Yes I can always extend the connector or run a external voltage regulator on both alts (which is what I should be doing lol), but it would just be easier to run one alt externally regulated and the other just off the ecm. What about just flipping th alternator upside down and having the connector and positive post pointing down? I’d be fine with that

Here are some pictures of the build so far. I will be working on the doors, and 5kw 120VAC inverter next.

I am going to have the bracket machined out of aluminum. When the first one is done I will post some pictures and pricing.

I will be installing an AutoTech 370amp on a Toyota FJ tomorrow. This kit will fit the 4.0L Tacoma, 4Runner, and FJ with or without supercharger.

I will post pictures of the FJ install and system tomorrow when I am done.

I am not able to check the Forums regularly so Email me if you have any questions.

And I thought my 2k watts and Mechman alt were overkill. That thing should DOMINATE Mecca and Uasci! Nice work and engineering.:thumbsup: :ohsnap:

Original post is locked so I'm commenting on here. Had to make a new account, but I am Fi_Taco from above. I purchased the 2nd alt brake from OP (as I live very close to him) and it has worked WONDERS. OP is super knowledgeable when it comes to alternators and has taken more than enough time to help me out (despite me taking so long to get funds). Voltage is stable and holds at idle when pulling full tilt on a sundown scv.7500. Voltage will hold for up to a minute before it begins to drop, even then I just need to feather the gas and it'll jump right back up. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out!
