    Replaced the rear drums and shoes on my 03 tacoma. Adjusted them so their is minimal drag and put wheels back on. I get wheel chatter now and I do not know why. Any suggestions?

    Did you use aftermarket shoes? Some of the aftermarket stuff is like Centic is garbage that will never work correctly

    Did you put brake grease on the backing plate where the sides of the shoes contact? There should be 3 raised areas on the backing plate where each pad contacts.

    They are also adjusted a bit too tight. Once you can feel the drag, back it off just enough that you don't.

    May not help the chatter, but it will help the wear.

    I bought the Centric drums and had to get the bastards machined because they not only had high spots, they were out of round!... it cost more than I paid for the drums. Centric = Garbage, just garbage.

    ^^^possibly this :thumbsup::fistbump:

    When I did mine, I cleaned the "high spot" areas and put anti-seize grease where the shoes make contact/rub against the back-plate.

    But yes, I would also recommend doing what Clearwater mentioned as well: :thumbsup::fistbump:

    Mine are duralast with a 2 year warranty. If it still does it after I adjust them again and grease the 3 contact points I'm going to bring them back. I've never had this much of a problem with drum brakes.

    Mine are also Duralast and don't have an issue with mine. In my humble opinion, I'm starting to really suspect that you're getting "chatter/squeal" from the shoes rubbing on the back-plate. I would also recommend cleaning around the hub-centric with a wire brush and put anti-seize there as well to prevent rust build-up and lessen the chance for the hub to get stuck... at least around the hub.
    BrakeDrumShoe_antiSeize_backplate.jpg

    BrakeDrum_Duralast.jpg

    When putting anti-seize on the hub-centric, it's okay to have a little bit on the stud itself as well... just NOT TOO MUCH!!! I wiped away and left only very little on the stud. You'll over-torque/tighten the wheel stud and snap them if too much anti-seize is put on!!!

    Hope the annotation helps? :notsure::thumbsup:

    I put duralast drums and shoes on mine......did the same damn thing. I got so pissed I took it to a great shop. The drums were out of round so they turned those...also put raybestos pads on cause the Autozone ones sucked ass...........In saying that I have changed my dads brakes on 4 of his vehicles with all parts from Autozone and his are always perfect.....I dunno what the hell went wrong.

    I've said it before, and I'll say it again - I'm done buying anything but the most basic stuff from Autozone. My return rate on Duralast parts is probably 25%. Their price of other stuff, like oil, is 2x Walmart. The people behind the counter have seen cars before, but almost never have they seen under a hood (no joke, I saw one of their counter people working the UPS counter after having worked at Autozone).

    I bought valve stem caps there recently that were ok, though.

    I actually bought some radiator hoses there last night.........even those do not fit like the stock ones....But I am going to keep them from emergency spares. I should have learned to buy OEM shit by now.....

    It's odd how I never had any issues with their most basic stuff (i.e. brake parts, some engine, etc). The only return I ever had to do was when I needed to replace the top hat on my front strut. Other than that, I can't think of one single return I've ever had to do? Oil, costs just about the same as well? It's my main goto store for auto stuff. I do like O'reilly and PepBoys as well, but I seem to gravitate to Autozone more often than the other two???

    But yeah, I've never personally ever had any issue with their stuff. Not defending them, just saying from my personal experiences. :notsure:

    Sure they can, but if "cars" is their professional focus they probably aren't switching from Autozone to the UPS Store.

    Well, I took them apart again and greased the three contact points on the backing plate. Adjusted both sides and I still get the chatter, not nearly as bad but it's still there. I'm going to drive it a little bit and see. I think I will be making a trip back to Autozone.
