DRL update to stay on w/headlights

New Tacoma owner and I searched the forum and couldn't find anything. I wanted to see if anyone knew if it were possible to update the settings with a scan tool to have the DRL's stay on with the headlights? Done it with a few German cars I've owned and wasn't sure if it was possible with the Tacoma.

 

not a setting you can change

FMVSS law allows DRL's but does not regulate them
but Toyota electronics are made according to ECE regs
UN ECE Regulation 48

so, can be done but not via techstream. you'd need to hogwire it

 

Are you talking about the L shaped Led's in the headlights? If so mine do stay on with the headlights, always have

 

different models of tacoma have different DRL 'profiles'

mine has drls which are also turn signals
and dim to parking lights when headlights are on

your tacoma may be different

My DRL's also stay on with headlights. I think that is how the 3rd Gens are. They may go off with high beam (I know fogs do) but I don't know.

They are not used as signals.

Thanks for confirming...I'm almost certain my DRL's turn off when the headlights come on hence my thread and question...Now you have me second guessing myself lol.

 

LED DRL's on TRD's Dim when the headlights kick on. Never fully turning off.

 

+1. They dim to the point you could easily mistake them as being off

 

They dim when the headlights come on. Quick and easy mod to keep them at 100% all the time is to short it by splicing the blue and red wires for the front DS DRLs at the plug. White is ground. I used a blue t-tap (hate those things) then wrapped in electrical tape. You only have to do one side so it tricks the computer. Test it with a metal razor if you want first. Man they are bright at night lol.

Not to sound stupid, but could to u explain that a little better. Did you tie the green and red wire to the white wire? Possibly a pic of what you did before you taped it up.

I like this mod...but I just don't want to go cutting stuff inside my new truck.

 

I would imagine the headlights outpower the LED's at night making it difficult to distinguish between the 2.

 

The LEDs come nowhere near to lighting up the road yes, but there is a significant difference in light when looking at the front of the truck at night. The white wire is left alone and the green and red wires were just connected to each other via a t-tap, no cutting or stripping needed. If you don't like how it looks it can be easily reversed by removing the t-tap and individually wrapping the wires with tape.

 

Also it all depends on the angle you're looking at them, seeing that the headlights project the beam at a certain angle, whereas the LED DRLs outshine the headlight from standing height.

The OEM DRL led bar has 2 power wires.
The first supplies 12V during when the switch is set in " DRL " position. They will light up at 100% brightness. When you switch to "headlights the DRL wire shuts off, and 12V is supplied to the other wire instead. The DRL's then only Illuminate at 50% brightness. Splicing the 2 wires together makes them run at 100% all the time no matter what position the headlight switch is in. Be cautious, as they can be very bright at night. Unlike your headlights, where there is a cutoff to prevent glare to incoming drivers, the LED DRL shoots light everywhere and can be obnoxious to others on the road. (They dim for a reason)
