DRL - anyone consider swapping the turn signal stalk?

My 2015 has a four-position headlight switch - off, DRL, parking lights, headlamps. From what I can tell based on other posts here on TacomaWorld, most 2nd gens don't have the DRL position in the switch, meaning that DRL are always on unless the headlights are turned on.

I actually prefer running with DRL on, so the added "feature" is a nuisance for me. I'd rather not have to worry about turning them on or flipping between DRL and headlamps and back again.

I'm guessing the wiring hasn't changed but the turn signal stalk simply added another position for the DRL option. If that's the case, I may swap out my stalk for an older version that doesn't have that additional position on the switch.

Has anyone confirmed and/or swapped out their stalk?

Not much help here with your question, but I just leave my headlights on all the time day or night and not even worry about dtrl.

Anyone else? I may take the leap (blindly, mind you) and subsequently sell my DRL stalk to another TW'er!

Sorry to bump my own dead thread, but anyone able to help me out with 1)year of your Tacoma, and 2)whether you're able to turn off your DRL, or if 'off' on the headlight switch is your only option but you still have DRL on. Based on my research it looks like 2012+ all use the same switch and can shut off DRL so I'm looking to find out if 2011 or earlier might be a good retrofit for my needs.

    Thanks.

I can tell you on my 12 I do not have the option to turn DRL off. My off position is DRL and I wish I had the 13+ stalk that had the option to turn everything off. I like the DRL most of the time but there are some instances where I wish I could turn everything off. If you want to sell your switch let me know. I can see if it will plug and play.

You don't mention your location, but if in Canada, there is no DRL option on the stalk.

Great info, thanks. If/when I do the swap if I'm satisfied with the results I'll sell my old switch and will post it here first.

interested in results, would like to be able to shut mine off. I have a 12 and they're always on. If its a simple swap of the stalk id probably do it.

x2 on this. I have an 09 and would like to switch to the stalk that allows you to turn DRLs on or off. Subbed for results!

hey tw I have successfully installed the oem 13 headlight switch with the drl off option[IMG]. the 05-12 are missing 1 white wire.[IMG]I had bought a 13 steering column with wheel and everything was plug and play except the white wire wasn't there. so I ran a extension wire from the switch to the drl harness.[IMG]I cut the green with red stripe wire and deleted it out of the white plug. I was going to just put in a plain jane switch but I wanted it to look more factory. thought I would share this for those who are interested.

I like the fact that I can turn off the DRLs. They melted the lenses on my 2009. I do turn them on when I get out ion the country on 2 lane roads where I might be doing a lot of passing. In low light conditions I just turn my headlights on. I really do not have much need for them.

So are you saying it's possible but need to splice in an extension wire? Why did you need to delete the green w/red stripe wire?

it is possible you have to run a wire from the switch to the drl harness behind the fuse panel. I deleted the green/red wire because it was no longer needed for power supply, that came from the switch itself

Ok, I have the new (old) switch and it works as expected, without the DRL-off option on my 2015. I'll be putting my stalk up for sale as soon as I've completed the swap this weekend. New OEM is $80+ shipping, I bought mine for $40+shipping and am not interested in making a profit but would like to cover my costs. PM me with an offer if you're interested (part is coming off my 2015 with 32k miles, and has the four-position switch including both DRL and off)

Note - to swap the stalk I think removal of the steering wheel is required. Working through that tomorrow when I have daylight and a few cups of coffee. Updates to follow.

I'm interested in your stalk but still not clear what needs to be done with the wiring. Can you keep us posted with what you find during your swap?

......and not quite working as expected.

For my 2015, I'm using a stalk from a 2012 that has the three positions - off, parking, on. I was expecting that off meant DRL, but off really means off. So, my DRL never come on with this stalk. Based on my subsequent testing, I can confirm what desertrunner24 said regarding the white wire - I have a white wire in that exact position and confirmed that is powered when using the 2015 switch in the DRL position.

The only visibility I have about the 2012 wiring is the stalk, and that's not enough for me to figure out how the wiring harness might be different. I'm guessing it might be related to desertrunner24's mention of the green/white wire but I'm not sure.

I'm going to look through the wiring diagrams from the 2012 service manual and see if I can figure it out. Worst case, I'll get a normally-closed relay to power the DRLs and tap into the parking lights for the relay switch - DRLs will always be powered unless parking lights are on, which will open the DRL circuit.
