    Hello everyone,

Can someone please explain to me the difference in my four wheel drive settings? I have 2018 TRD OR and I believe they say 4h and 4l. How do you know when to use which one over the other? I wanted to drive to Lake Tahoe tomorrow and it says no chains needed so obviously I don’t need my 4wd on right? I don’t want to use it wrong and mess my truck up. Thanks so much!!

    Umm... coles notes version.

If theres any slick conditions or chance of slipping use 4h. If theres snow down put it in 4h.

Only use 4L for slow slow speed or if you get stuck... same goes for the rear locker.

Never use any 4wd on dry pavement.

How would I know of chance of slipping? Just if it looks wet?

You’ll either feel it or see it.
If there’s snow on the ground you will slip.

Have you tried reading the large book that comes in your glovebox? Or even the instructions on your sun visor?

Just use 4H, 4L is for crawling real slow. If ground is just wet, you will be fine in 2 wheel drive. I drove all the way through Idaho with lots of snow in 4H. No problems at all. Be safe.

Driving to lake Tahoe in 4 low will be much more enjoyable than 4 high.

99% of it is judgement. There’s no hard and fast rule. If you feel the road is slippery use 4HI. If it looks dry go back to 2HI.

Just ignore 4LO for now. It’s there to boost torque to the wheels, something you won’t really need for what you’re doing.

    ...too much shit to list.
Don't use 4L in the snow unless you are aired down and literally crawling.
Don't bother with 4H unless there actually is chain control or measurable snow on the ground. I say this because if you are in 4H and the ground is not slippery, the transfer case will bind when you try to turn sharp.

The traction control does a really good job keeping the truck going in a straight line but if i see the yellow traction control light on the dash a time or two i flip it in 4H. The DCSB trucks are pretty well balanced and dont try to swap ends too bad in snow and ice.
Take it slow don't make any quick steering movements and you'll be fine. It's the other cars you gotta watch out for.

Watch out for black ice too.

There are lots of shaded spots on the road from from sac to Tahoe on 50 where black ice loves to hide. If the road looks wet but you don't hear splashing, its probably iced over. Always take it super slow in the turns in black ice and keep your distance from the other knuckleheads.
