I went to a shop to replace some worn u joints in my driveshaft. But the shop said they couldn't do it because it's the center joints and he said we have to take it to a specialty shop. This doesn't sound right at all, but have you guys ever heard of this?

Yes, that's a double cardon joint, or something like that, and is a little more involved than just a u joint swap as there is a ball pivot in the center where zerk #4 is

Drive shaft shop for sure .

Sometimes it can get a little involved .

Some shops would just send it out adding more cost this way you save some money .

They might have told you your drive shaft needed replaced like I was told once long ago.

The u joint in the CV is some odd size that Toyota doesn't sell, they will only try to sell you a new driveshaft assembly. It would be cheaper to find a used shaft for sale on here. Are the joints really bad or do they just need some grease? Are the clanging and making noise?

Any speciality driveshaft shop can do it, the issue would be getting the correct u joints for it.

The u joints are actually worn, with a lot of play in them. I guess it's to be expected with 300k miles on them

I'm glad I read this thread. I checked my DC joint, and found that I missed one of the fittings when I greased them not too long ago. Turns out it was one of the u-joints, not the center. The fitting was hidden by caked on grease. At least it was not dry, but I wish I had known to check this when I bought the truck in 2013.

Ok just to update this thread, I sourced the required u joints from Rockford. All other options were either out of business or the suppliers no longer satires them. The part you need for the double Cardon joint in the 2 piece driveshaft is part number K2540. I called Rockford directly and their customer service was very helpful and kind, I thanked them for still making this u joint and made sure they knew they were the only manufacturer I had found that had them still. Thank God for them, because they were my last straw. Hope this helps anyone in the future with my problem.
