First I had a ping, now I have a vibration only on deceleration. I was inspecting and greasing my ujoints when I noticed my slip yoke has some play in it, is this normal? I can move it up and down and side to side a little.

Everyone’s “a little” is different so without seeing it myself it’s difficult to say for sure. But yes the slip yoke will have a bit of movement as will the carrier bearing. U-joints should have no play up/down side to side.

Is the vibration on decel or during braking?

Only on decel. I never had issues on acceleration. I finally gave up and took it to a driveline shop. They confirmed that the slip joint had tons of wear and was sloppy. I bought a used shaft and problem solved for $100. The shop quoted me nearly 2k to fix my old shaft. I have a driveline disconnect and that price included a new one even though nothing is wrong with it, they did not want to mess with it. This once again confirms that I need to continue to do all the work on my truck myself.

All the misinformation (AKA "BS") I've heard for the last 30 years just re-enforces my tendency to do my own maintenance to the extent that I can. Over the years, the old, experienced mechanics have all long since retired, moved, or passed away.

    Update :
wow , this took a long time. I finally found a shop to fix my shaft. The first shop in Mesa AZ wanted $1600 to repair. I have a disconnect for towing and they wanted to start over, that part is $1000. This was unacceptable to me so I located a shop in Phx that agreed to machine the old shaft from the disconnect, weld on a new slip joint and balance. They even had to cut and replace the flange on the front half of the shaft and 1 new ujoint. $300. The shop owner was not excited to work on it and probably lost money on the deal, he did it in his pare time but it took a little over 4 weeks. A big thank you to TAD driveshaft repair in Phx. I am not sure he will ever work on a disconnect again but if you need driveshaft work, I recommend. Everything is nice and smooth now.
    All's well that ends.

Mine has been in use for at least 100k miles + disconnected towing for another 25k. A heck of alot easier than dropping the shaft every time.

I suppose, seems a little overkill but if I were a retiree who lived across all grandkids' states on the road and towed my town toy then yeah I guess it's viable, especially if I was staying in graveled RV parks, wouldn't want to lay in rocks disconnecting a drive shaft at 70.

Certainly adds a lot of complexity and new failure points for example the extra play and vibration issues you encountered.

I am only 60 and it is no fun. Had a samurai that I had to do it every time. I am not sure why it failed, I might have hit a rock or something to f'it up. I think if you saw it in person you would see how simple it is.
