My apologies if this has been beat to death but I couldnt figure out the right search term to find it. I recently bought a 21 OR to replace my 16 OR and completely forgot until I got home (not that it would have made a real difference) that they deleted the storage cubby on the drivers side of the bed. Has anyone retrofitted it or something similar in its place? I used the ever loving crap out of that thing and being without is already getting on my nerves. May just put an undercover swingcase there and call it a day.

Yeah there have been several guys on here that have stuck a factory one back over there. If you search around the forum a little you should be able to find a few Threads.

I asked Jeff Lange for the part numbers a few days ago, here's what he sent me:

64742-04010 - Box, Deck Side Trim LH
64074-04011 - Cover, Deck Side Box LH

If you install it, come back and let us know how it went.

Went with the Mobtown locking cubby door, with ARB compressor behind it. Works for me. If I'm to be honest, it was scary as hell cutting the bed. There is no going back if you screw it up.

I have a new 2021 that lacks a driver's side cubby, and I, too, thought about installing one. But then I asked myself, what would I store there? Looking down through the passenger side cubby, you can see the pavement though the large holes for the door hinges. This is where water splashes up from the rear wheels and leaks into the bed.

On the whole, the deletion of the driver's side cubby was probably a good thing. As it is, I'm going to have to go to some trouble to seal the passenger cubby. (Toyota is probably going to eliminate that next.)

Someone sells a little kit on here to make them water tight, I just put my stuff in a Ziploc bag and the contents stay nice and dry.

Cubby Covers, sold by a TW member fixed the problem and eliminates water, dirt and rocks from entering the bed side boxes from below. With a canopy on the bed, the bed compartments stay clean and dry.

    Before Cubby Covers:

I deleted all of my Cubby Cover pictures except this one.
They came with strong double sided tape, but I siliconed them to make sure they wouldn’t fall off.

If I was going to do this, I wouldn't install the factory box or cover. There are deeper aftermarket ones with locking covers available. You cut the same hole, but get a lot more use out of it. I haven't cut into mine yet.

Then you make the mold & rent time on a 40 ton injection mold machine $200 is a bargain cheep ass bastard

I have a better idea let's have them built in China & loose more manufacturing jobs like say mold making & operating a injection mold machine that's a great idea!

After your done with the job pay your employees the 0.23 cents for the day then clean your mold & machine with a toxic cancer causing chemicals & dump the waste in the river

    NICE

I agree with your sentiment, although you could have articulated it a bit better.

Exposes the harsh reality of trying to do business these days. See so many posts from people in here expressing outrage that a product would have any kind of profit margin built in. Most people are absolutely clueless with regards to the costs of running a business. Add in the fact that a lot of Tacoma owners are do it yourself types that typically are not in the upper echelons of income & wealth (generalizing here), so they tend to be extremely price conscious.

All you have to do is watch Shark Tank. So many companies owned by good people wanting to make a quality product and time after time, they are told to take the manufacturing overseas to reduce costs, even if that means a reduction in quality. Just the sad reality of the situation.

Back to the subject, I was very disappointed in the bed cubby’s leaks. I thought I will just not use them. There is room under my jump seats. Unless, someone has a great idea what to use them for? I am using one for a WP switch and controlling the bed LED lights I just installed. Then the switch is right where you need it when you need to turn them on.
