Ok there the pic loaded. That is how the shop gave it back. Does that look right? Am I missing something? I obviously put the inner seal on before mounting it. Here is what it looks like now.

wow, there is no spacer. The bearing can float either direction. I guess they were proud to point out the last shop forgot the c-clip preventing the bearing from moving outboard. Well, they forgot the spacer, roughly 3/4” thick, allowing the bearing to float inboard against the CV and separate from the race. There was no horizontal preload on the bearing.

I also wouldn’t recommend aftermarket wheel bearings but they probably saved you some money these last two trips though.

Yeah, there's no bearing spacer and I don't see the retainer either. If that's how you got it back from the last shop, you probably need to have a chat with them. Too bad you're not close to me. 20 minutes and we'd have it good as new.

Sounds like potentially two shops screwed up on the bearing replacement. Some advice for others who will eventually need to do the bearing: Since my truck is approaching 25 years old (as are many gen 1's), when I took my knuckle to a shop I looked for people who had some gray hair and quizzed them about what they knew about the taco bearing. In my case they knew immediately and assured me they worked on them many times. There was absolutely no problems with the finished result for me.

I also found that most machinist don't know off the top of their heads if you ask about about gen1 bearings or mention that it's off a '98 tacoma because they only see parts in their shops, not the whole vehicle. But if you show them the physical part and mention the pressed-in bearing, you can tell in their face if they have seen it before. Usually the their face brightens (or sours) when they recognize the part.

Even if a shop says they know how to do it, when I drop off the knuckle I include a copy of the fsm page that shows the exploded diagram of parts installed in the knuckle. IIRC correctly, there might be a couple of diagrams on that page (with and without ADD), so I circle the correct diagram in pink highligher. I try to make it as idiot-proof as possible for the machinist in case it gets handed-off to a newbie assistant.

Here is a picture of the two parts you are missing. A non-ABS spacer and a retaining ring, not to be confused with the c-clip on the opposite side. They both add up to the appropriate space to properly side load the wheel bearing with the outer CV hub and nut. If you have ABS, then I missed that, just replace the smaller spacer on the right with a tone ring instead.

Well, long story short the shop refused to take responsibility for not putting the spacer or retainer in. I took it to another guy who seems understand them but he told me he can’t find a spacer anywhere. Does anyone know where I could find one? Thanks! FYI it does not have abs.

Hey guys so I got it back from the shop for the third time. I’m ready to slide it on the cv but I want to double check with you guys. Does it all look good? Thanks to @zippsub9, I got the right spacer and retainer. Thanks!

The CV outer seal looks a little bent back, but won't hurt the bearing or affect anything. It may not fully seat to keep dust and dirt out of the interior, but not a crisis by any means. All else looks correct, just be sure to fully torque down the outer CV nut.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I doing this job now unfortunately and I can find the spacer but only through the dealer. Does anyone know where else to find one? Or has anyone thrown some calipers on the spacer and written done man the spacer dimensions, ID, OD, thickness, stuff like that? I was thinking it’s gotta be somewhere on Amazon no?

    Thanks

Are you ADD or Manual Knuckles? Do you have ABS? Answer these questions and I can help you with the spacers. No, these are not common parts that would be sold on eBay or Amazon. They aren’t really wear parts, with the exception of a tone ring that got dropped or dinged and even then that only applies if you are ABS equipped.

2000 Ext Cab SR5 4x4 Non-ABS, but I’m going to be using the knuckle(s) that are for an ABS equipped Tacoma. Hubs are ADD not manual. It’s my understanding that Al I need to do is put a spacer in where the ABS tone ring would be if the truck had ABS. Local Toyota Dealer can get me the spacer(s) next day for about $20 each. I was just hoping ai could find them cheaper somewhere online but I’ve been having zero luck really.

I have plenty of Non-ABS spacers.

However, what are you doing to plug the sensor hole?

So what do I need to do to get a couple of those spacers from you? As far as the ABS hole goes. I was under the impression I could just thread a plug into hole and call it good?

Just curious, you can tap and plug the holes. I definitely just wouldn’t leave them open.

Just send me a PM with your shipping address.

Some fashion a simple plate to cover the sensor hole/port and then seal around it with silicone/FIPG.
Others leave the ABS speed sensor in place and just snip the wire off.
Finally, some go this route - https://absolute-wits-end.com/toyota-truck-abs-sensor-delete-plugs-front/

    Hey zipsub,

I just posted on the buy and sell forum (1st gen).

You wouldn't happen to have a USED OEM set of knuckles you are willing to swap with me? I need the 6lug set with abs sensor holes. I bought a used OEM set a couple years ago. While sanding off the rust I discovered mine don't have them.
