    Hello guys and girls!

so this morning I had the pleasure of waking up to my driver side door lock completely missing and after closer inspection realized it has been vandalized as well. I was going to contact my insurance immediately but I figured I should post it to my favorite community to see what they think.

    it’s a 2022 TRD OR DCSB 4x4 6MT MGM

seeing your baby vandalized hurts your soul, unfortunately I know some of you guys can relate :-/

I’m just wondering how bad it really is and how I should go about it next; already filed the police report, gave it to my neighborhood yadayadayada.. Cop made me realize something I hadn’t thought about but if it’s true it’ll be an expensive fix; he said I would have to replace my keys and any other locks on the car that uses those keys (ignition, tailgate, glove compartment) praying it’s not the case.. I tried to get Toyota service dept on the line but they’re impossible, so I’m hesitant to call my insurance until I know the extent of the damage..

Thank you guys so much for any help / advice..

Sorry to see that shitty thing you're dealing with!
In my experience your insurance broker will give advice before anything else.
Not sure how it works where youre at, but my broker has never screwed me over for asking dumb questions like "if i go off-roading, if i crash, if i broke this, etc. etc."
So thats who i would suggest talking to, just ask for their advice and tell them you dont want to make a claim or anything without thinking about it.

I don't think the proper term is vandalism in this case. It's attempted theft but the thief wasn't good enough.

you're absolutely right, and thank God they suck at theft.. I can't help but feel like they'll try again tonight considering the lock is completely off now, ugh so much stress/anxiety.

Here's the part number for the lock cover # 69217-AE020-B7
You can buy those online as well as a new lock cylinder that fits your year. A good locksmith can re-key the lock to your key. No need to replace them all

Sorry that happened to you OP, thats a bummer

Not sure if this is helpful, but maybe it will give you an idea of how these parts go together. This is on a 4runner, but should be the similar across the board. That little lock part does pop out with one bolt accessed from inside the door. Looks like the bolt was pulled all the way through the front side. Then a little stick on that piece goes through the door to interface with the lock actuator

    [IMG] [IMG]

    [IMG] [IMG]

Other side of the lock inside the door. Interfaces with the lock actuator in this little star thing. Twisting this would allow them to unlock the door. You wouldn't have to tear down this far, I was replacing the actuator and just took pics of everything inside

Wouldn't the damage ruin the lock and thus ruin any trace of the key/pin configuration? What a terrible thing to do to someone's vehicle. Glad its not worse.

I'm not sure if someone thought they could actually get in that way. OP, do you have some haters in your life? Perhaps it's time for a locking gas cap too.

Sorry this happened to you. Getting insurance involved would depend on your comprehensive deductible (usually not too expensive).

Looking at the damages it looks like you need the following parts:
    Door handle cover (comes pre-painted) 69217-0E030-B0 $15.92
    Door handle base/frame 69202-04020 $111.31
Couldn't find the part number and list price for the lock cylinder if you have one. If you do, you don't have to recode all the door locks. You can just buy the lock cylinder and have it coded back to the original key.

I also noticed that there was a little paint damage on the door around the door handle cover. If you want to take care of that too, I'd recommend claiming it with insurance. Hope this helps.

a thief could get in by popping the lock out and turning the actuator with a flat head screw driver. I posted some pics above of how the lock cylinder interfaces with the lock actuator

Seeing your post and learning this gave me a unsettling feeling.. I realized whoever did this knew exactly how to do it but something interrupted them.. They had access to the actuator already, but didn't get in. Weird.

    Doing the Lord's work
For many people, letting insurance handle all of it is the only option they think is available. I saw it too many times in auto glass; windshield replacements with $500-1000 deductibles, and people paying way more than they should. Not saying thats the case here, but its definitely a possibility depending on OP's deductible amount.

My deductible is $500 and they cover 80% of rental car costs if rental car is needed. Would it make more sense to do it through insurance? Seems like the parts could add up to $250-$300 depending how much the lock cylinder costs. I'm mechanically adept so I could do the labor myself but is 1-200 dollars saved worth it? Hmmm..
