Thanks! I searched but couldn't find the pic of where those retaining tabs were. I'll cut up some plastic and fish around to release it......

    Good morning guys.

I just briefly scanned this thread and it seemed really familiar. I had an 06 tundra that had the smog pump issue. I ended up purchasing an aftermarket kit with block off plates and a circuit board that i wired into the harness that made the truck think it was already warmed up(I believe)...therefore no need to run the smog pump circuit. fixed the issue completely. Cant remember the name of the company, but i wonder if they have made one for the tacomas?

It’s in development. If you email them, they’ll put you on an email list to notify you when it’s done.

This isn’t a smog pump. You don’t have this device on your 2006.

I didn't have to use plastic strips to release the cover. A little wiggling and it popped right off. Easy peasy.....

Gee! You lucked out. Mine needed finesse and those prongs pull out at the same time. Now that I know how to do it, It should take 20 sec.

I lucked out again; the pending code cleared itself. I'm good to go for the time being. I didn't call Toyota because of this and I'll keep a watchful eye on the UltraGauge......

    Just me
My turn! Threw P2442 & limp mode last night, I reset it but still shows a P2442 Permanent with current code cleared. Well it came back this afternoon. Reset again and got home, remove 1" filter & put old foam and snorkel hood back on.
Will Toyota honor the recall with evidence of using the 1" external filter? (foam looks kinda crinkled up)

To be clear, will P2443 eventually turn into P2440 and P2442? My 2012 [119k miles] is currently showing P2443 for a day now. Is it safe to drive or would it (at any time) go into limp mode?

P2443 code references the valves being stuck which (as far as I know) does not trigger limp mode.

The pump failure codes will trigger limp mode. I honestly don’t know if one will cause the other. I would get it evaluated as soon as you can.

That being said - and take this worth a grain of salt - my dealer tech said it was safe to drive while they waited on replacement parts. I pushed until they gave me a rental truck and did not follow that advice.

Dealer won't fix it unless I pay $450 for a "deeper diagnostic". I don't want to fall deeper in the rabbit hole for them to tell me that P2443 isn't under warranty. Tough situation. Toyota of Glendale sucks.

    [UPDATE]
My regular mechanic says that the part might fall under the "8/80" component which has a coverage of 8 years or 80,000. See page 17 miles. https://www.toyota.com/content/ebrochure/warranty/2019/T-MMS-19CHR.pdf

To give an update on this topic:
2012 Tacoma w/ 4.0 and 165,000 miles. CEL and Trac Off lights popped up yesterday out of nowhere, no other issues, bone stock truck, I am original owner - code reader gave me P2443 & I started searching here & elsewhere.
Long story short, called local dealer and they are fixing it, no charge. Evidently my VIN brought up the recall & they have ordered a ‘repair kit’ for the air system.
Just left dealer, parts ordered & they will do the work early next week when everything comes in. No upsell, no BS, they are covering everything - thank God for small favors & good dealerships!

Good to hear that it worked out for you. I had the complete opposite dealership experience...

My apologies for not updating. Eventually I got a pending code as displayed on my Ultragauge. I called the dealer, they ordered he parts sight unseen, and when the parts arrived they repaired it no charge. I honestly expected to have to fight with them and they surprised me with how painless the process was. Maybe I just got lucky but I'm thankful that it worked out well. Geez, they even washed my truck. The entire process took less than 2 hours.....

I am sorry to hear that others have had a negative or expensive experience with this, I'm curious if I got lucky with the right VIN/build date or if I have a local dealer who knows how to work the system?
Picked my truck up this morning, definitely a little bit of new hardware under the hood.... I am also attaching pics of my receipt in hopes that there may be a warranty code or other info on there that might help someone else get this repaired on Toyota's dime.

The air pump is definitely not the oem version. So there must be an upgrade or revamped version
    of this.

My understanding from the dealer is they have a rebuild kit of various internal bits and a revised cover. It definitely looks different than what was there last week when I took it in!

At least for my 2012, in the repair they included the cover which wasn't there from the factory. Later years had the cover. My 2015 has the cover......
