Down shift feels like a engine break?

Sorry guys I hate to start a thread about another transmission issue being there's already a transmission thread but I didn't get any responses when I posted my question.I've had my 16 for 6 weeks now and besides a few things I dislike the biggest issue I have is when slowing down or going down a hill my truck will down shift premature and the rpm gauge will fly up to 4500. The only way to get it to stop is stand on the gas to get it to up shift again. It almost acts as a engine break but when your going down a hill it seems quite strange that it's feels the need to do it. So my question is, has anyone else experienced this issue and if so is there a reason because I really don't like my motor jumping up to 4500-5000 rpms.

That was going to be my question. Cruise on or off?

My 06 Tacoma with cruise on would downshift to try and maintain selected speed.
Without cruise, it would not. Just coasted on down the hill increasing speed till brakes were used.

My 09 Ram acts the same way. Will downshift to try and maintain the selected speed if cruise is on.

It does it both ways, I thought the same thing maybe it was trying to maintain the set speed but it will do the same thing without cruise control set. If the cruise is on it will only do it for a second as it slows the truck down so it upshifts again to increase speed.

Have you taken it in to the dealer for a free road test explaining your situation to the service manager ?
4500 rpm seems a bit excessive to the point where I would consider taking it in to the dealer
The 2nd gen 5 speed uses a feature that turns the injectors off when you decelerate to save fuel and you can really feel it .
It took owners a while to get use to this coming from older vehicles that do not use this feature and there were all kinds of driveability complaints
Your 6 speed auto is designed similar to the 5 speed and now they've added the atkinson cycle to the mix .
I am willing to bet a simple re-learn is all it would take to get you on your way cruising smooth .
This ofcourse is a keyboard diagnostic and will never compare to actually test driving the truck
I havnt seen many members complaining about downshifts with the six speed .
With this said , keep us posted .

Haven't had an issue with high-revs going downhill but there definitely seems to be a stronger version of assisted braking of some sort with the '16s. There's a hill in my neighborhood that I'd essentially have to ride the brake down in my 2012. With the '16, I don't have to touch the brake and rarely get over 15MPH going down it. Also noticed that it seems to coast a bit slower when letting off the gas coming up to a stop light/sign.

I have a appointment scheduled for this Monday coming up. I could just be paranoid but I haven't ever had a truck do anything like this before and I wanted to get you guys's opinion to make sure it's not a issue anyone else is experiencing. It's much more noticeable when going down a hill but it does the same thing when slowing down or coming to a stop light. You can actually feel you body push forward as it downshift where as when Im driving my f150 it's almost unnoticeable it's downshifting.

If the engine is broken its definitely a warranty issue

Hopefully it will smooth out as I put more miles on it . It has 2800 on it as of right now...there isn't a issue with the motor it seems like more of a issue with the tune on the transmission

Normal, and actually quite useful as you don't have to ride the brakes as much going downhill. My Ram had the ZF 8 speed transmission and it had much more aggressive downshifting when slowing down or going down a hill.

you must be coming down a steep hill.
when I go down hill I would say about half the time
my engine will rev to 3k to slow down.
4k-5k seems excessive. I think the computer learns
your driving habit. do you normally rev high while driving?

Honda has a downhill braking assist on our Civic. If the car recognizes that it is going downhill and the brakes are applied, then the engine will downshift to help slow the vehicle. The only way to get out of it on the Honda is to push into Neutral and then back into Drive or to level out the car. The Honda uses the 3 axis meter and I know the Off Road has a 3 axis meter built into it. Is this present in the 2016 Tacoma?

but his engine is breaking. thats worst for a engine

I have only had this happen a few times and it was a ridiculously steep hill (I think 14.4%) coming down from a ski mountain. Was it annoying, certainly but it slowed me down to a speed that was reasonable. First time it shocked me, second time I was expecting it.

I down shift my truck all the time. It helps save on the brakes. Their is nothing wrong with your engine going into the RPM range when it's not under load. I do understand you saying your truck does it automatically. Mine does also and I like the fact it does.

I don't have the kind of grades to really test this, and I don't see anything specific in the manual regarding it, but in previous vehicles I had, the software for engine braking took into account certain patterns in applications of the brake pedal. For example if you kind of lightly rode it, let off, then reapplied the brake, it would drop down and engine brake, but just steady pressure wouldn't trigger it.

Maybe play with this a bit to see if some braking habit is triggering it that you can avoid if you don't like it dropping down. 4500 rpm is nothing to be concerned about. It is not downshifting for normal purposes, but for braking. Think of it as a special mode. It isn't going to be effective engine braking at low rpms.

Maybe they mounted the "hill start assist" module backwards. JK, it is probably some crazy safety feature, but this is first I have heard of it. I would let the service tech ride along with you to verify.

I think this is pretty typically with Toyota trucks. My 2nd gen does the same thing. It was weird to get used to at 1st. The Silverado I had before seemed to want to go faster down hill even without me hitting the gas. My Taco downshifts and engine brakes on hills. It's kind of annoying actually. It's also one of the few things I really hate about it.

This is when you go to the dealership and get a tech ride a long. They give you a highly qualified c tech to drive with you and tell you everything is ok.

If I was a service manager I would not be taking one of my A techs to do this drive a long. When I need him in my shop for real issues and to get work done.
