    Hi everybody,
I just signed up and would like some help some on my 03 Tacoma. I didn’t know the spare tire needed a key to lower the spare tire. I don’t have the spare tire key and like help on this.Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated..

Your truck should have come with a tire changing kit, but it's possible it got lost/stolen/sold. In the extra cabs they are put into the storage containers under the jump seats. Not sure where they would live in the regular cabs, guessing just behind the bench seat. If you don't have one, I'd recommend picking up a replacement set like this:

    https://www.amazon.com/Dorman-926-782-Spare-Tire-Tool/dp/B07F4XW3RH/

If you need to get the tire down today, you should be able to rig something up to fit into the crank and spin it around. A long flathead screwdriver maybe, pry bar, or dig into the jack kit of a car. I know my Hondas have included a similar tool that you use to spin the scissor jack.

It's not a "key". You use the OEM kit, or a replacement as linked, as described in the owners manual:
    upload_2022-1-14_9-54-48.jpg

You can find the owners manual, if you don't have a paper copy, in the Owners section of toyota.com

If your truck has some additional locking mechanism on it, it's after market.

The spare tire lock is an option sold by dealership

If I had that I'd just weld a socket to it and use an impact to lower/raise.

Without the key inserted the lock spins freely but won't lower the spare.
Some have been able to pry the lock off at it's base exposing the lowering slot.

If the socket is welded to where the key goes then it'll work. Not the shroud covering it. I'd cut that off.

Sounds like the OP should just cut all that off, and get a swing out tail gate to mount the spare on. It's the only option.

Getting that tool into the proper location at night working alone is almost impossible. Even in the daytime its very frustrating. There should be a tube from the bumper to guide that tool in.

I've read of someone doing that with some plastic pipe, I just can't remember where...

Just another reason to get a swing out.
