I picked up a folding ramp on Amazon for my almost 12 year old German Shepherd "Santino" to get up into the bed of my Tacoma. His hips are pretty shot at this age. I support his chest and rear end when he goes up the ramp. He rides in the Tacoma every day out for his afternoon "sniff" and "business" outing.

Ramp. Best move for dog and you. Twisting with 100lb squiggly dog is a recipe for a back issue.

Sorry to hear about the pooch OP. Hope he has a speedy recovery & get back on the road with ya.

This ramp's an awesome solution. Gonna have to grab one of these ramps or make one for my pup. This a DIY?

Rear seat delete for pup spacious comfortability.

I found a ramp that looks like this on Amazon, works fine with my 100lb. Shepherd.
It could be a little bit wider but I guide him up so he doesn't fall off the edge. There are more expensive and wider units that extend much longer.

I actually volunteer sometimes at a place that takes in animals for people that don't have plan for them when they pass away. They also rescue out of bad situations. That's where I got my old man. They had several of these donated and were happy to help when his arthritis became an issue. I'm pretty sure this is an internet special.

Wish I could figure out a ramp that slid under the seats so I didn't have to get in the bed for it every time.

I actually don't have the rear seat delete. Mine are just always folded down for him. The delete would get rid of the last step though if he ever gets that timid.

If he can do a couple steps with your help and a harness this fits right behind the front seat............

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
I may give that Chewy step a try. I recently Amazoned a decent ramp but to set it up safely at the door sill or even on the seat at the proper angle, the door itself interferes and won't allow that good angle. Plus, it's light and easy but too long when folded to keep in the back seat area so I throw it in the bed with a tonneau cover....

....and never feel like taking the time to get it!

The nice thing about Amazon is if you don't like it you can return the item. I've use my Amazon folding ramp resting on the lower door sill. I usually don't load my German Shepherd into the back seat because he smells like a 12 year old GSD should! He thinks he's tough guy riding in the bed covered by a shell. Shell window open. Either way, good luck.

I took the whole rear seat out and built a little platform for my dogs. My dog just recently tore a tendon in his back leg and I’m trying to baby him as much as possible until surgery. I have also added a ramp that I hang on the latches that previously held the seat backs.

Edit: I still have some finish work to do on the edges this is a progress photo

I don’t let my dog jump either direction. But he’s Corgi and they are prone to back issues. He’s in extremely good shape at 6 years old, but I pick him up and put him in, or grab him to let him down.

For those who have done the seat delete, is the main reason being it removes the last "step" up for the dog and a better angle of attack for the decent?

a ton of people disagree with me for some reason, but a solid crate that is adjustable or covered uncovered for the weather and secured to the bed is THE SAFEST way to transport a dog or goat, etc.

of course, people will argue with me, "what about in a crash?"

well, a loose dog in the cab is terrible in a crash.

for getting in and out, use a ramp, or lift the dog up of you can handle that.
dog restraints in the cab are often not used correctly and/or the dog chews, throws a fit or tangles the restraint system.
I've only seen one dog that wore it's harness correctly and didn't squirm or tangle.

I've seen many non roll collisions with dogs secured in a crate that was secured to the bed properly. those dogs had minor injuries from slamming a foot or two (i have padding inside my crate for this) those dogs recovery fine.

if it's really hot, i fully open the wind/water openings and spray the dogs (mine love it) this keeps them cool for xx amount of miles.

of course, smaller dogs can fit in a crate strapped in the back seat in the cab.

there's really no safer way for the dog to be secured than a crate. all the other nonsense simply doesn't work.

use a ramp to get in/out. my current dogs are extremely agile, so they're fine jumping.

Pick my 85 lb Lab Layne up every time loading him into and out of cab and/or bed. Even a short distance of impact is bad news bears for their hips and joints.

I’m sorry to hear about your doggo, hope he’s on the mend!524635B9-7F4C-4CB3-A5DA-471288238061.jpg

My pal Stevie jumps out onto a thick lawn. I too was concerned about a leap to the garage floor.i-j5r8WRJ-X3.jpg

The ground under that thick lawn is also hard. He's not jumping into a foam pit! Just remember his front legs are repeatedly taking the impact of all his weight. Not good!
And if your making him jump in the truck, that's not good for his back legs. As he gets older this will have negative affects on him. We need to have more common sense for our dogs. After all, how would you like to jump in and out of your truck?
