Is payload based on an empty tank of gas? So if you fill up you are already losing 120lbs of weight?

No, it accounts for a full tank.

My understanding is the fuel in the tank is accounted for.
It does not take away total payload.

    But……120 lbs?
If you’re that close to max, does it matter?
I’d be looking into a trailer.

Curb weight is empty. Payload is everything you can carry after you’ve filled up the truck. It is based upon calculations of GVWR-Curb Weight =payload. Payload can be diminished by lifts and larger tires though. Among other add-ons or add-ins.

dumb question...i already have a leer 180 cap on my tacoma...if i go weigh it with a full tank, and whatever it turns out to weigh, if i subtract that from the GVWR then will i know my payload remaining after the cap weight? I ask because i dont know the curb weight

I don’t think so. It includes all fluids and a full tank of gas but no people as I understand it.

Yes when we purchased our trailer I went and had truck and trailer weighed and then just truck. This gave me my payload information as well as the trailer weight. Do you have the sticker on your drivers side door pillar? It will give you a lot of the information you need to run your calculations.

Yes it does. Sort of. I don’t remember the exact weight number, but it’s probably less than the average American.

Edit: I was wrong. See my quote below.

Drain your coolant for extra weight saving. Water is heavier than gas.

Here is what it will look like:
    IMG_0887.jpg
The Toyota sticker shows GVWR in my case 5500lbs the tire rating shows your payload in my case 1050lbs.
The scale gave me my weight which when subtracted from the GVWR showed how much (little) payload I had left

Sort of. The most accurate number is GVWR. Payload is your trucks curb weight as it rolled off the assembly line subtracted from GVWR. Any modifications to your truck, all of the gear, tools, etc., that you keep in the truck at all times eats into your payload. I keep a few basic tools along with gear to help get unstuck. Tow straps, small shovel, ax, etc, along with a small compressor, tire plugs, and a 4 way lug wrench. Don't forget the driver and passengers. I weigh 220, my wife 140.

If you take your truck to some certified scales and actually weigh it, then subtract the actual weight from GVWR you'll find YOUR trucks true payload. None of them actually have all the payload that is listed on the door jamb. And some will be significantly less.

Many Tacoma's only realistically have 300-400 lbs of useable payload.

Charts like the one above are useless.

I went looking for the number and it seems I am wrong. The owners I was looking at did not leave a separate weight allowance for the driver.
