    Hey all,

I checked the OM but didn't find anything related to this, only the suggested oil change every 10K miles. Does anyone know if Toyota uses any kind of engine "break-in" oil in their new Tacomas, or am I clear to do my first oil change around 1,200 miles?

    Thanks!

I believe it’s a special 20w-60 oil. It should be changed at 500 miles.....

    PS. Just kidding...

If they do, it lasts for 10,000 miles until oil change at second visit for Toyota Care.

Thanks for the responses. So are you both telling me that you didn't/wouldn't even do the first change until 10K?

You will be fine to let it go as that is what Toyota has in the Maintenance Book. It would not hurt anything if you change early though, did my first change at 1500.

I've never heard of break in oil. Is this more common in sports/exotics?

Ive only heard of shipping oil in dirt bikes, atvs, and such.

I believe the last manufacturer that used special break in oil was Honda but I don't think they do any longer.

I can't comment on whether or not it's common as I haven't seen or heard of it being used in sports or exotic cars from the manufacturer. However break-in oils do exists (example: Royal Purple has one) and are intended to provide additional protection for recently built motors when startup wear seems to be more excessive. The idea being that full synthetics aren't designed to protect against this early wear period.

The oil change interval on a new Tacoma is 10,000 miles? I knew that certain newer cars were now good for 7500 (my company car) but that’s the first I’ve heard of 10k on an oil change. Are they making the engines more wear resistant or is the synthetic oil just that good? Wondering if maybe I should stretch out my oil changes on my 2nd gen a little bit past 5000 miles?

Audi has been at 10k or 12 months for a while now. I believe they moved to that around 2010. Synthetics appear to just be that good in a lot of cases. But as with anything car related I'd argue it depends on driving conditions. I know a lot of people still error on the side of caution (I'm one of them) and do earlier change intervals, but a lot of oil analysis I've looked at for *most* daily drivers suggests its really not necessary.

They probably run break-in oil when the engine is tested at the engine plant but the truck rolls off the assembly line with regular oil.

Off topic but what about break in oil for virgins? I knows there’s KY or Baby oil but their viscosity is around 20/50 and high mileage oil is too coarse....

The break in oil appears, after it’s broken in

Yeah but in order for warranty purposes, it has to be done at 10k for Toyota’s.

Thought we were still on the virgin break in topic. Glad I double checked
