Well, I have to replace the subwoofer box in my Taco. Got a question though, will a ported box (which I currently have) or a sealed box sound better in our trucks? I am running Alpine Type R 10t (2 of them) and listen to a lot of country, rock, and EDM.

If you like the output of your current setup (being ported) you will be disappointed with it sealed. Im a 100% ported advocate as most people Cannot tell the difference between a properly setup Ported box vs sealed but you gain the advantages of a ported box.

I'm a die hard sound quality fan. I'm also a speaker designer. A properly designed ported enclosure will sound just as good IF NOT BETTER than a sealed enclosure. The ported enclosure is "tuned" to a specific frequency where the cone movement is controlled. The further the cone moves from it's neutral center, the higher the level of distortion. A ported box is intended to control how much the cone moves as the frequency played goes lower.

The only downside of a ported box is that it's larger.

Definitely what these guys have said. Key is how much room you have to work with. I have a sealed box in my ext cab b/c I need the space for cargo on ski trips and such and it sounds clean. My brother doesn't care one bit about cargo room and has a slot port box in his GTO's trunk that sounds just as clean if not better. Loud as eff too but clean as can be.

just remember that will take a Custom box and MOST 10s require 1.25-1.75 CF net per which will be touch to get unless you know where and how to get the space

Sealed is a little quieter with tighter cleaner hits.
Ported requires less power, is louder but bass is not as tight.

    I prefer sealed.

    Not always true,
A properly designed Ported box does not have any of the above mentioned problems

While I would not spend time arguing with any of the audio-heads posting here, mostly because with my knowledge, I would be a knife at a gun fight,,, one thing to keep in mind is that a properly tuned ported box will sound as good or better then sealed. Key is, properly tuned, if you do not have the skills or the desire to learn proper port/box tuning, then sealed is a better option since all sealed requires is proper box size to sub matching and maybe some box stuffing.

Definitely go ported, x2 if there is going to be more than one speaker in that box. 2 speakers vibrating at different frequencies in a sealed box sounds like hell imo.

Well with the Alpine Type R 10t, it only requires about .75 cubic space for perfect sound according to Alpine.

6" of mounting depth is also pretty deep to fit behind a dc seat.

Well the box I landed is roughly giving me about 5.5inch, and the subs recommend atleast 3.25, so I think I will be all set.... hopefully

Yes sorry, i forgot the T is the Shallow mount.
Also, 6 inches of Mounting depth is still workable
If you need additional clearance use 1/2 baltic birch instead of MDF. ITs much stronger as well

don't forget about space for the vent. according to alpine's recommendations you need a port that has an area of 7.25 in^2 and is 24 in long. i believe you double the port area for two subs, but i can't say with certainty. in any event, it may be tricky trying to get a port of proper area and length while still leaving mounting depth space for your subs.

i really hope you can make it work!!!

In planning today we will be running a 6 inch flared port External unloading driver side, amps mounted above. Should fit super nice. Also the problem with having such small spaces ported is that they either need less surface area (the port) to reduce length on tuning or a bigger box. Since the box has a small range and "max" recommended being .75cf its going to make your port length rather long

I have the same subs, Alpine SWR T10, two of them in a sealed enclosure behind the backseats powered by a 500 watt amp (PDX v9) wired in 2 ohms. The bass notes are tight and well-defined. I can't even reach half level on my RUX-knob because I'm afraid that my rear view mirror will fall off from the shake. Godspeed.
