Does leaving keys in ignition while truck off trigger security system so it doesn't start?

    Hi all

Ran into an issue today where my 2019 Tacoma SR5 wouldn't start in the parking lot.

Was waiting in the parking lot with the kids while the wife ran into the store.

Upon start up the truck would turn over but the engine wouldn't start. There were times where the engine would start up but die immediately afterwards.

After waiting a couple of minutes the truck finally started up. I scheduled an appointment to take it into the dealer but am not very hopeful, unless this issue happens again regularly.

Searching the forums I did find this thread:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/truck-starts-then-dies-in-2-3-seconds.327802/

Where one of the posts mentioned leaving the keys in the ignition while the truck is off, which is what I did, can trigger the security system and cause similar symptoms that I was having.

Is this a thing, where there would be issues if you leave the keys in the truck and try to start it up again without ever removing the keys? Are there any details about this security system? Not sure if I was typing the right search terms online and and only did a quick skim of the manual but didn't find anything.

    Thanks in advance.

I have a 2017 Sport MT and leave my keys in the ignition all the time, pretty much every single night and whenever I go into a store for a beer run. Course I live in the sticks...

Yes, leave the keys in may result in a no start. If the truck started right up after you remove the key and there is no check engine light your wasting your time at the dealer.

Its happened to me multiple times.

Locked garage and locked work parking, I never take my keys out of the truck. If I leave them in the ignition, I get the no start issue you described.

All I have to do is pull the key and flip it over and the immobilizer now recognized the key and the truck will start.

    Thanks all.

    I think I confirmed it.

Waiting five minutes doesn't trigger anything and the Tacoma starts right up. After ten minutes it did what it did earlier today. Where the first time it starts up and then dies immediately afterwards. When trying again it just cranks and doesn't start. Earlier today it would start and die every couple of tries.

The difference with dnlskier is that I didn't leave the truck earlier today until I went to pop the hood and it started afterwards. So maybe opening the driver door has something to do with it too.

The security light looks a little bit different than what I found on youtube. Where it's under the head unit and starts flashing when you remove the key. I guess that's what's needed to be able to start the Tacoma again because it didn't flash when I just turned off the Tacoma and left the keys in there.

Looking in the manual it sounds like not all vehicles are equipped with the system. (because it mentions "if equipped"). But I don't think I see it listed on the Maroney sticker. So not sure if this is something that comes with all models.

Anyways going to go ahead and cancel the appointment at the dealer.

Thanks again for the input all.

4 cylinder trucks don't have this feature.

Toyota designed it this way so if you make the mistake and leave the keys in the ignition and someone decides to try and steal it, they will get the no start and move on.

This must not be the case in the 2017 MTs :spy:

The computers in most new vehicles will go into a sleep mode to conserve battery power when the vehicle is not running. When either the doors are unlocked or the doors are opened the computer is "woken up" thus allowing the key code to be read and the vehicle can be started.
