I thought this was interesting, I knew those little numbers meant something.

They only print them on one side of the tire, so don't be mislead if you cannot find the numbers.

It's a big deal with Kijiji tire sleazes selling 15 year old tires out of garbage bins.

It's more crucial for winter tires, 5 years and they lose a tremendous amount of performance.

I just went out and check mine and they said 00XY. Now I’m all confused.

Largely irrelevant anyway; the manufacturer's warranty for weather cracking starts from the in-service date (the date of installation) for the tires. So as long as you hang on to your receipt, you're covered. Additionally, wholesalers keep their tire stock in climate-controlled warehouses with no natural light (no UV degredation), so all other things being equal the only difference between a tire built in 2014 vs a tire built in 2017 is the number on the sidewall.

My first thought was, maybe they just switch to Roman Numerals.

I had an old Frontier with a doughnut spare tire. I always checked and maintained the pressure in it (60 psi) when checking the other 4 on the truck. One day I heard an explosion outside my house; sure enough that tire blew up under there. Luckily it blew out the sidewall away from the gas tank. Checked the date code and it was from 2000.

(Cheap ass)Customers will come in and there will be dry-rot/cracking all over the tires.

Me= "your tires are getting worn out, you should replace them"

Customer = "those tires are only 2 yrs old!"

Me = "umm, no they're not"

It's how I learned that Discount Tire sold me an $1,100 set of tires that were more than four years old. Was not happy.

Only sleazy tire shops will patch a tire that's over 4 years old. My neighbor owns a tire shop and said it's the universal guideline that they cannot repair any tire that's over 4 years old. That's why those born on dates are there for. Just sayin

I would never thought 4 yrs is old for a tire.

The better approach is if your tires pop, it’s time to replace them.

My tires are almost slicks so it doesn't matter how old they are. They need replacing.

Again, a guideline that's supposed to be based on the in-service date, not the build date (another reason to keep your receipt). And that's supposed to be six years, not 4. If a shop won't patch a 4 year old tire and makes you get a new one, they're the sleazy ones, since the RMA still considers the tire serviceable and repairable 4 years after the in-service date (they actually state that a tire is usable and repairable for up to 10 years, as long as it is still in good condition--no weather cracking, etc. 6 years is just the warranty period against weathering)
