I was going to change the oil on my 2022 Tacoma. 3200 miles since new but it has tons of idle time and short trips (small remote island) over the last year.

Didn't realize you're supposed to have a special tool for the oil filter housing. Can I get it off without the tool or should I wait two weeks so I could one of the tools? I can't just go buy one locally since we don't have any stores, and Amazon takes two weeks to deliver anything here.

It’s probably been done but you risk damaging the housing without the proper tools. And if it’s the first change it’s going to be super tight.

It will be a much more pleasant experience if you have the proper tool...

    It is a wonky fitting...

It could possibly go quite wrong...

I'd advise that you wait until the tool arrives, and you might want to get the aluminum replacement housing, if for no other reason than "just in case."

Patience Grasshopper! Wait for the next boat to bring you the proper tool. You've waited this long, what's 2 more weeks?

I would use the tool, especially if the dealer was the last to put it on. I don’t know if Toyota techs are just blasting the plastic housing on with an impact or what, but I’ve never had it on as tight as the dealer had it on. You don’t want to be trying to get it off with oil filter pliers or something.

I say get like the motiv x oil filter wrench or whatever and wait the two weeks. The truck will be fine.

Is it just me, or is anybody else scratching their head over a mechanic without an oil filter housing tool?

Glad my 2015 has an easy to get at regular filter. This one looks like the same setup as the one on a friends older corrola. I used one of the specific oil filter wrenches (aluminum) and even it broke trying to get it off. She had to go to a dealer. And yes, that mechanic most certainly didn't use the correct tool...

Just wait, you’re going to need it anyways and you’re changing early versus very early.
While you’re in there, don’t over tighten it, just like a spin on,,,,, it’ll be a bitch to get it off next time.

Didn't even bother to drain the oil from the filter first.

That first tool is the one I use....

....d on my traditional style filters

I used the special tool and it broke due to how tightly the filter housing was screwed in. Took it back to auto zone and was able to get some oil filter pliers. Eventually it came out. Scuffed the plastic a little bit, but it works fine. No leaks.

I’d wait: living rurally cuts both ways. If you wait and do the oil change in two weeks, nothing bad will happen. If you break the housing, you won’t be able to drive the truck for two weeks while you wait for a new one.

Yup, spend that time waiting for the motivix tool shopping for an oil filter housing and order one. Don’t change until you have possession.

Order the proper tool, and have a spare housing on hand. At least that’s what I decided to do. If I end up dropping the filter housing, and it cracks, I want a part on hand
