Is it really necessary to change out the oil plug gasket every oil change? and if so how often ? Does the oil plug gasket it comes with from the factory reusable ? I imagine as long as it’s not leaking it should be fine but just wanted to be sure thanks guys

It will get brittle with time. I have reused mine one time because I ran out of replacements but I wouldn't reuse them more than once. You should be able to buy them at the dealership cheap. I think I paid $3 total for the last bag of 15 I bought.

Best practice? - Yes. And they are cheap so don't be douche here!

On the other hand, will it hurt anything if you reuse it? - Probably not. Been happening since the dawn of the ICE.

It doesn't need to be replaced until it needs to be replaced and by time you realize it, the only way to replace it is to drain all your oil again.

I think I got a 10 pack for 7 dollars or something and that'll last me 4-5 years so I don't see any reason not to just change it out with each oil change.

The Subaru we had used an actual metal crush washer that definitely wasn't reusable.

I now use this Screen Shot 2022-02-21 at 7.05.06 PM.jpg and that washer stays there forever

when I had normal drain plug before, I changed it every time the drain plug was removed

the problem with the washer is when torqued down, it deforms, and there is a certain % of probability that it won't seal right if reused

but if I change a new washer, I'm 100% certain that if torqued right, there is 0 % chance of leak

and I'm the kind of person who loses sleep over 1% failure so I better change it or I'll go nuts all the time crawling under to check for leaks

I think this is why some claim never change and never leak, probably they have plastic washer that somewhat retains form

soft metal washers will just get crushed thinner and thinner

I've never changed one on a Japanese vehicle, never had a leak, several over 100k.

I've had to replace on old domestics.

just get a fumoto and call it a day - clean and simple and makes oil changes so easy.

It’s cheap, but also unnecessary. Even metal crush washers are pretty reusable. My truck might be on its 4th with 275k

Noted, I chose valvomax over fumoto because the cap has a rubber o-ring seal adding additional protection if the ball valve fails.

I have been using valvomax on multiple vehicles for years now no issue, but I'm sure more complexity introduces potential failures, maybe that guy got a defective valve from the get go.

    Lol.

I had my 1st leaker on my '04 last year.

16 years of 2x/year oil changes. I guess I don't see myself running out and buying those crush washers in bulk.

I'd say there is no reason not to replace it. will reusing hurt anything? Probably no, but its easy and cheap to replace, so why not?
