Do dealers take in modded vehicles for trade in?

I know I will get raped on any value added from modifications but I’m asking if a dealer will or can take in a truck with wheels, suspension, front bumper, camper shell, prinsu, etc. or if they can only take vehicles closer to stock?

Everything is professionally done and looks excellent. Warranty is up in 2k miles so that wouldn’t be much of a consideration. I’m just wondering if I should try to sell the truck as is to a private party and deal with all the headache associated with that or if it’s even an option to try to trade it in.

    Thanks

Yes they will, usually. You could just ask the dealer though instead of random people online.

They usually will, however prefer stock and the trade-in allowance they offer will typically reflect that. You may get more via private sale, of course that can be a PITA.

They will for sure but you won't get a single penny in value for those mods.

Rip everything off possible and sell the parts yourself and you'll get pretty much the same tradein value anyways but you'll have a rack, shell, bumper, wheels etc to sell.

If you need to unload them asap just put a good price on the parts you'll get flooded. Sell your wheels for cheap just make sure buyer has stock wheels to swap you so its easy. Shell and rack just keep in your garage or backyard til they sell.

The only thing that might be not worth the time to take off and swap is the suspension.

The dealership is not somewhere I look forward to going to get a nice new vehicle. I definitely would like to avoid going there for small talk or to ask a dumb question.

You'll never know until you try. Keep in mind, dealers will always try to lowball a trade in stock or not. My guess is that you'll do better by selling it yourself.

I agree with Jaque8. I recently was considering trading for a 4Runner. On the lot was an awesome TRD/OR with amazing mods, I spoke to the sales rep about it and he said it had been on the lot for over a month. When the owner brought it in to trade he explained that he had over $20,000 in mods. They told him to take their offer or remove the mods and return to stock and they'd give hime more. Hurts but in a way I understand.

Not a bad suggestion. Depending on the mods, I'd take them off. Could be worth it. Might not be.

I was just in my Lexus dealer this afternoon and there on the forward show platform was a very heavily modded GMC Sierra truck. This thing must've been lifted at least 6", had huge swampers on like 22" wheels, welded front and rear custom bumpers etc. I was kinda surprised Lexus would accept that truck and try to sell it.

They're into making money so they will offer you super low for your trade in and tell you, "modifications are a personal preference that might not be liked by potential buyers," or, "since it isn't OEM, we don't know the quality or installation quality." I agree with trying to take off as many mods as you can and resell them before you trade. Or just go in prepared to take a loss and you won't be so bummed out.

Yeah, but the OP is looking to buy a car not hang out and drink bad coffee while making small talk for no reason. The only person who can tell them if they’re ok with trading in their vehicle is the sales manager signing off on the deal. A Carmax probably wants a stock truck. A small local dealer might actually want the modded truck. A volume dealer might not care and just send it to auction regardless of what it is.

Take the crap off and sell it separate. I've bought many used & new vehicles.
Mostly only a highschool kid would want anything with mods already. Prepare for the loss of mods & maybe overall value for not stock.
Your best bet is to take off as many mods as possible and sell on the side then trade in.
    These 3rd Gens won't retain real value until there's a 4th Gen and an SR5 is $40k..

The closer to OE the trade in is, the easier for the dealer to resell, no matter if the mods are professionally installed or not, if the dealer is large or small.

Make and model, mileage, condition, trim level, body type, engine size and transmission, factory options and color, local demand and availability, dealer franchise, the vehicle being purchased... all play a role in determining trade-in value before any mods are even taken into account.

A decent car lot will take anything on trade. Just don't expect what it's worth. The only reason to trade a vehicle is to save yourself the hassle of dealing with the public. Selling a used vehicle can absolutely suck. I sold a wrecked Avalanche on craigslist with plenty of pictures and descriptions and quotes from two body shops on the cost to repair. First person showed up and wanted to talk me down in price because the wheel bearing might have been making a slight noise.

Whenever I have sold outright, I've priced below market to sell quickly and deal with as few of people as possible. When ever I've traded in it's been because the difference in trade in and selling outright was very little and not worth the hassle,

When I went to trade in my truck, the only thing I had put on was pro wheels and all-terrain tires. They told me they could offer me more if I would put the stocks back on. Ended up selling it private for a lot more than they offered, it took a few weeks to sell but I was happy I went that route.
