I have been wanting an offroad bumper for a while and am thinking about drawing up and building my own from 3/16" plate. I really wish someone would offer plans that I could submit to a sheetmetal laser for the parts. I don't really see any options for the 1st gen trucks. Shipping costs are pretty hurtful for DIY kit I like. The Coastal Offroad kit would be ~$625 shipped to me. The complete 4xinnovations bumper would be over $900. The bumpers I really like are the Shrockworks, the 4xinnovations and Coastal Offroad. I also like the Elite and Relentless front bumpers.

For the record, I'm not wanting to copy anyone's current bumper. My favorite is the Shrockworks but my bumper won't have the large radius corners on the top front edge(which I REALLY like) due to not being able to create that. I do plan to stack the plates corner to corner and fill in with weld and grind it to a create a 3/16" radius. I'm pretty sure Shrockworks and 4XI both make the front and top as one piece and bend the metal with the large radius.

I plan to make my bumper and create templates for each part and offer a template kit or CAD drawings which will allow folks to either make their own from 3/16" flatbar or have a laser fab shop cut the pieces for them. I have not set a price for the template kit or the CAD drawings of the individual parts.

I'm brainstorming here and welcome input or ideas on this. Ultimately, I would like a cool bumper without spending $700-1200. I estimate I will have ~$100 if I do all the cutting and ~$200 if I order the pieces laser cut. Part of me wants to do "ALL" of it but it will be a substantial amount more work. :)

Thanks for the info. I certainly overlooked that one. That's a great price for the plan but there's a few things about that one I'm not crazy about.

I do like the flatland4x4 rear bumper though.

I’m not the biggest fan of the front bumper. it looks very bulky and comes down too far. interested to see what you come up with

I got this from CBI for like $430.

After buying the stock materials, and doing all the planning, sketching, and cutting, $430 seems like a pretty good deal.

i agree. I'd be willing to spend $430 for a bumper that I like a lot. The CBI components look super nice but I prefer the look of a taller front lip(CBI looks to be about 2"). Overall, the CBI looks like a super nice kit though. However, I don't see where they currently offer a DIY bumper. I see the complete bumper for $899 and the DIY rear for $425.

Sounds like your not going to be happy till you design and build your own which is most likely the best option

Break out the tape measure and start to get dimensions

Your probably right. I tend to be a bit particular about things. It's a sickness. :)

Yeah, shipping isn't too bad. Certainly better than shipping a complete bumper.

The way this is put together, making the front profile a little taller might be difficult because the front piece is all one piece.

I have a build thread I put together that linked somewhere in my build page (link in sig) if you care to look. Might help. CBI doesn't include any sort of instructions with it, which was a little frustrating at first, since there were some pieces that could literally go anywhere (triangle gussets), and CBI doesn't even have any pictures you can use as a reference.

Anyway, back when I built it, a few of us were building them at the same time, and ended up getting them together.

Thank you. I agree that trying to make the front profile taller in the CBI kit is not a good option. I can certainly see that trying to piece together a bumper with little to no picture or instructions would be a challenge. At least puzzles have a picture to look at. ;)

I pulled my front bumper and began mocking up a bumper with cardboard. After a few days of thinking about it I've decided to purchase a bumper or kit instead of designing and building my own from scratch. After studying studying the various bumpers I'm leaning toward a plate bumper from ARB, 4xinnovation or Coastal Offroad(DIY).

I realized its going to take more time, trial and error that I expected. I like all the bumpers I mentioned above and plan to go with one of them.

I fabbed and built my own ARB clone. I was pretty cheap. I think I have the build thread link in my signature.
